Just a question for some of you that have used these before, what US military trailer works best for a SBU Unimog?

I would more than likely just be using the frame and axles and such and changing the bed. Which model works best as is? Factors I'm talking about are height, braking system compatibility, weight, tongue connection, etc.

What do y'all think or what have you used successfully?

Or is there a better option that's not US military but not crazy expensive? Build your own?

It looks like an M105A2 is the easiest option.

Seems like a switch to a 404 hitch is needed, how about the air hookups? Are they ready to go as is?

Anyone know of another trailer like the M105 that is slightly longer?

The M105A2 trailer is really nice but with my U1300 ambulance I need to extend the Lynette hitch about 12-18 inches to move the trailer back somewhat. It's too close to the back of the SBU. With my 416 troop truck it wasn't a problem. There is another military trailer designated the M2001 with duals -- might be better to your liking. They were designed as a chassis frame for big diesel generator sets.

TLane, I cant find anything on the M2001, have a link to anything?

I didnt know about the M106A1, that is a nice trailer. I bet it is quite the beast like you say. Wonder how easy it would be to lighten up?

TModler, that is an interesting trailer too. Dont really know much about steering trailers like that, how do they do off-road?

The A/M-32 is a rough terrain trailer by designation. It should do reasonably well in reasonable situations. Unreasonable situations are best avoided with any trailer.

The real art is backing one up.

My brother-in-law and I are working on tracked trailers with walking beam suspensions for hauling wood out of soft areas. Right now the best looking deal is going to be snow mobile tracks and home made running gear from pick up trucks. He's got a clever, though unproven, idea of building tracks from slices of truck tires, of which he's got piles of used ones. Fastening will be the biggest challenge.

Another fun but more difficult idea is a driven trailer using the PTO. Land Rover actually made something like this. Kinda cool to have the truck in neutral and the PTO in gear which let the trailer drive the truck!!

Fun stuff.

I really like the M-105 series trailers. The lunette ring can be adapted for better fit by grinding a flat on top and bottom of the ring. Then it'll fit the U-1300 hitch better. Leave the lunette nut slightly loose and the trailer can tilt on rough ground.

On my radio box trailer the M-105 axle was moved back about 23". This idea is not new. I know Mike Pop did this on a trailer years ago. The initial reason was to match the radio box wheel wells but I found that backing up is a real pleasure with longer wheelbase trailer. There's a way to move all the brake stuff back, too, including lengthening the manual wheel brake linkages. I have a thread on SS on that process: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showth...105-trailer-modification-add-Unimog-Radio-Box

There are M-105 frames available cheap because the Mil Veh people take off the beds to use to make 'bobbers' (no relation) out of Deuces and 5 tons. I paid $180 for one with wheels and tires, for example. These are very adaptable trailers for modification.
