Hi all

I'm trying to get 92 500E's steering wheel and air bag soon.
What do I need to do for a successful swap?
What kind of contact ring should I get? also where should I get it? dealer?
I've been planning this but never done yet.
Is it a hard DIY job?
Many thank~

You don`t need anything, just the wheel and the airbag.Don`t go dealer though as it might be to expensive, the sportline cars have the same one so try to find a used one
Yeap! I found used one around $280 including air bag.
But, again, I heard pre 90 cars need contact ring (mine is 89).
I want to make this sure.
Any thoughts?

That`s to much money, compared to UK prices(we are spoiled for choice here)lol
The ring should be there also have a look as the early sport C class w202 have the same wheel

FWIW, ask the seller to confirm the condition of the $280 wheel. When they get old the rim material (cushion and leather wrap) become detached internally from the frame of the wheel and it moves back and forth as the wheel is flexed.

I did ask seller to send me pics of wheels.
Is it pricy if it isn't a triangle shape (sport) wheel?
Thanks.

That's not my car, but I think it's my wheel. I bought mine from Dave, and that's his car. It's ultimately for my project '87 but it's currently installed on the '90.

Just to clarify a bit.

To upgrade the steering wheel on a 86-91 Mercedes, you need a contact ring from a 92-93 Mercedes.

If the wheel you plan on purchasing is a 92/93, confirm that the contact ring is included. Most of the time, they are not or they are sold seperate.

If you plan to use a 94-99 wheel, then you need to locate a 92/93 contact ring.

Also, you could also install a 92/93 wheel on say a 94-99 Mercedes, but there is more work involved. Some drilling of the wheel hub assembly would be in order and you would need the plastic fillter piece (not a horn contact ring)

Pretty much all you need to know about this kind of swap is here; Rik Johnsons W124.036 under the interior section.
