Does anyone know if it would be difficult to update an '86 560SL engine to a '92- 500sl engine. My 560sl engine needs rebuilding, but I wanted to update the engine, with a newer one. Has anyone done this?

Don't know if it will bolt on

I don't know if the '92 500SL engine will bolt on directly in the R107 chassis. My guess is that it won't. You would also need to upgrade the ECU as well.

I'm not sure, but I believe there was a Euro 500SL engine for the R107 chassis. Don't know if it's a direct bolt on though and don't know if you'd still need a new ECU to control the new engine.

Good luck.

500SL

The newer multivalve V8s would be no go. Even if they would physically fit there would be the issues of ECU electronics, transmission, etc.

The R107 series 500SL is virtually the same as the 560SL. Most markets got the 500 (5.0). The US and Australia with more stringent emission requirements got the 560 (5.6). Both are M117 alloy engines producing similar outputs.
