G'day Benzaholics,
After completely rebuilding the 500SEL ignition system & ripping out a lot of hair I gave up & took the beast into a Merc workshop & strueth .. it was the fuel pump relay. It turns out that a German guy here in Melbourne who completely rebuilds them had a batch of dud chips
so I was replacing bad relays with other bad relays ( 3 in total) anyway the spanner dropped in a brand new one & bingo . . it started first time ( could there be a moral here?) Many thanks again to all who contributed.

That makes sense, every symptom you described pointed directly at Fuel pump relay..
You said you installed New units, not reman..had you said reman, I would have told you to either go buy a NewNew unit or pull a Known good from a working car.

Either way, glad it worked out in the end.
