Never went over the scales but I would say I weighed at least 30K lbs loaded with the big truck. If I took my eyes off the egt gauge for more than a couple of seconds it would soar to the sky. I would back off as soon as it went over 1200 degrees. That coupled with my front wheels being toed out and the weight along with seeming to be always going up hill and down to 7th gear quite a bit, averaging 40 to 45 mph and part of the trip on a small country high way with steep embankments on each side and 12" of shoulder made for a pretty hectic drive from Neb to Denver. But I made it.

Pegged at 2800rpm on the way out to Denver from KC with an empty trailer going 56mph I got about 8 mpg. Fully loaded I got about 6mpg and on the way up From Lajunta to KC with a smaller load but at 2600 rpm and 50 mph I got 9 to 10 mpg. The fat flat tires still tend to follow surface changes in the road but by that leg of the trip I had adjusted to some toe in so it was a lot less intense.

Here are a couple of shots from the trip and one of the 2450 next to a 1500.

My wife walked by as I was looking at the first one and said, "nope our neighbors already probably don't like us." Hehe

I only have 3 SBUs actually. The 2450L38 (which it turns out is a 2150 as is the other Twin Disc Unimog), the 1500 and the 1550. Then there is the 140 race truck. I'm not sure if it would be classified as a SBU or MBU.

The top of the snorkel has a cyclone pre-filter thing like on tractors. That whole apparatus is going away at some point. As it is set up with the Cumins and a big intercooler there is not room under the hood for an air cleaner. I'm thinking something on the roof that incorporates the air cleaner box, a roof top ac/heater and some lights in the front. I think I can use a standard plastic snorkel and and elbow to plumb it. There will be a small space on the drivers side that is still open for interpretation. Maybe a storage box, but it will be kind of small. Maybe a fresh air intake with a filter and blower. ??

A few questions:
How does the twin disc unit shift? I see that they are 6 speed w a torque converter, but what makes them so great? And how did they (whoever did the installation?) mate the torque tube axles to the transmission?

The twin disc website is a little slow, but the units they make certainly look "MOG" tough.

esde,

Part of the appeal of the twindisk is the ability to set your engine RPM's at any speed (say, 3000rpm) to run implements, snow cutter, water pump, etc, and use the joystick to move the truck at any desired speed, nice and slow, instant fwd/backward, like a hydrostatic drive.

The Twindisc is showing some fault codes right now and is not working 100%. Mostly due to neglect and sitting around not being driven despite multiple requests to do so. Also if one of the previous sitters had gotten on the ball they could have had all the manuals and information on the truck but due to no interest it was all tossed a few years ago at TwinDisc. I guess I should have gotten on it as soon as I made the deal rather than waiting to take possession, but that might have already been too late.

From talking to them it was the test sled truck built in cooperation between Mercedes, Twindisc, Cumins and UAWD and is not as refined as some of the other ones. They said there are a couple hundred of them around the world.

The transmission is so great because it is an automatic. Primarily. It's a very tough and sophisticated transmission. Now I just need to figure it out.

Btw some epcs show it as a 2150 and some show it as a 2450. So who knows. The main difference is the hp rating of the 2. This truck is currently set at 230hp which was detuned from 240 to meet emissions. I would like to get it up to 300 if I can do it reliably. But even as is it's pretty fast. Couldn't really test it out because I didn't have brakes. A regulator is cracked. So it was kind of scary driving it, but I gave it a bit of a go.

Basically it is slated as my cross country tow rig. Also it will have the biggest bed on it of any Unimog I have at the present. I just bought a U500 bed and frame for it which is about 11 feet long and a lift cylinder. So it will be good for hauling brush and stuff too even though the loading is a bit high.

With that bed installed I may at some point build a removable camper box built from an insulated aluminum or fiberglass box. At this point I'm not too interested in having a plush and huge camper. My 1500 has a primitive camper with a bed platform, stove, sink, refrigerated and a few cabinets inside. With a little work that can be pretty comfortable. If the diesel fumes don't bother you, as the bed is over a 100 gal foam filled fuel cell.

The cab is from some years ago when Mercedes found some cabs in a warehouse and offered them for sale. Most people who were heavily into Unimogs at that time got one. I was going to use it to make the 2450 into a crew cab, which could still happen. But at the moment I'm fine with it as is or maybe stretching it a couple of feet would be good.
