Hi,

Does anyone have pictures of the undertray/engine panel? I see one on the parts diagram, but my car doesn't have one and I've not seen one in pictures here. Was the engine panel standard on all models and just magically fall off? Or more like a Unicorn?

My car has the side panels and mounts for the bottom panel. I'd like to put one on it, if they are available.

They were all shipped with the panels as you see them in the EPC. Lazy owners/mechanics failed to put them back on when they were done servicing the car. Grr.

There are actually two ""anti noise encapsulation panels" on your car, one below the engine and another that extends back beyond the transmission. You can see them here. Doesn't look like the rear one is still available, but the front is for $85 list.

You can find some in the aftermarket if you search by part number, but it's hit or miss. If your little "nutserts" are missing they are available from the dealer for pocket change.

An alternative would be to try and find one at the knackers (junk yard).

Believe it or not, one of the primary reasons for these panels was sound attenuation, especially in the diesel models. It's amazing the difference in noise level they make when they're in place.

I've only seen these on the six cylinder gas(300) models. I had thought only these cars came equipped with them. And the bottom piece is usually missing as mentioned above.

Sound encapsulation panels:
Nope. Gas, diesel, from W126 and on, they all had noise encapsulation panels underneath. Unfortunately, some idiots who worked on them decided they were too much trouble to deal with so they just left them off.

I've gone out of my way to find and replace them when I've had a car that's missing them.

The ones on W124 chassis cars are HUGE, and the W140 cars have multiple panels like the W126 models.

That is not correct. The cars that came with noise-encapsulating covers were the 350 diesels and some other variants, but they were not available on all W126's.

They may not have been on Gen 1 cars, but they were on just about every Gen II W126 I've ever seen. Both my current 350SDL and 300SEL have them. I just inspected a 560SEL and 420SEL in the last couple of weeks, and they both had them as well.

Are you referring to part #104 in the diagram you posted?

The Gen I's did not have this part, only select Gen II's and from memory, it was mostly on 350SD/SDL's because of the diesel clatter.

I didn't post the diagram, but yes, both #104 and #172 have been observed on diesel and gas W126 chassis cars. As I stated previously, I've seen them on diesels, where I know they were standard, as well as 420 and 560SELs. And I saw a complete set, front and back, on a 1990 300SE last year. I recall because I had to drop it to inspect the transmission.

They definitely were not standard on 420 and 560's. I've seen them on 350 diesels but other models did not have these as standard. Would love to be proven wrong, but this is not something that came on all W126's, just certain models.

When I got my 350 both were still in place, but the rear panel was in poor condition. I ended up throwing the rear panel out before It cracked and fell off while driving. I still fit the front one. There are also some side skirt pieces that the pan fits against, and the oil cooler lines run through.

In addition to noise, it helps keep dirt / splashes out of the engine compartment. My car had its auto trans pan replaced at some point, and the rear pan kept things so clean the MB parts counter sticker on the pan was still perfect.

If you want any pictures of the pan I'd be happy to take some.

Pictures would be great. I've searched to the end of the internet, but haven't seen any photos. :)

Thanks,
Joel

I'll see if I can get a picture of mine in the next day or two. Not sure how well you'll be able to see it, but I'll give it a shot.
