My dad was talking to me about getting an "updgrade" (car wise) He told me maybe i can sell the car for 3/4K and get the knick knacks out of it along with resparying certain parts of the car, and I think now we're leaning towards a BMW E36 M3

really? the m3's the car to have when i was in highschool....it won like 2, 3 car of the year awards here...
Don't get me wrong, I love M3's... but not in the E36 package. I just think the body styling on the E36 is ugly.

The E30 and E46 M3's are great looking... but can't say the E36 looks good.

well in the back of my mind i was thinking why not just keep this car as well. But see my dad only does the stock market. Thats his job. And heck i dont even have a job, and so we dont have too much money and the money from the car would help.. but idk where this will be going just yet. If i do sell it I KNOW i'll be getting another 126 in the near future.

As for the choice of the M3, i like em.. heh. The whole point really was to sell the car and buy a 560SEC that has already been modified more than mine (much more) rather than spending SO much to have it look the way i want it to. But nothing comes up so the next choice was the M3.

I'll agree with you. I think the E46 are 10X better than the E36 but i only have so much to spend, decent E36 is around 10K. E46's are all like 30K and above.

IF Dad pays the bills - go with his advice.
I haven't followed your post history to know about your car or its history under your ownership, but recommend caution over his leanings.

Don't think I was saying you should get a E46... I know they're pretty expensive for young people. I'm just saying the styling on that car is much better. I don't know on the cost of a E30 M3... but I'm guessing its also more than the newer E36 due to collectors. The E36 may be a good car... but its one of those cars that I don't like the looks of.

BTW, a Norwegian classmate of mine brought his E36 coupe from Norway a few weeks ago to Poland. At the German/Polish border he lost control at 160kmh and totally screwed the car up. Not a single body panel was not untouched.. all the glass were broken... and the car landed into a sewer ditch. They emerged unhurt, except for a scrape due to the glass and the driver had to wear a neck brace... but the car did its job and is safe.

I guess because I'm more a BMW guy than a MB guy at heart. The E36 is closer to being a pure homologation car than the E46. Also, it's 300lbs lighter, you don't have to wind it up so high to get power out of it, and it's not full of a bunch of nonsense electricals. To top it off, I think it looks more like how a German car should, and it's VERY tuneable. Oh, and if you can find a Euro-spec one by way of Canada then the choice becomes even easier to make...and the E46 M3 engine sounds like a chainsaw.

Eww! Don't do it. However, if you absolutely HAVE to have a BMW, go for a 635CSI, M6, or my personal favorite, the 8 series. the M3 kinda sucks. and the M5 is a bit small.

maybe something like this might be better than an M3.
eBay Motors: BMW : 8-Series (item 330114665513 end time May-05-07 16:33:21 PDT)
This fine 8 series

VS this???

No contest!
Case dismissed. The accused pleads temperary insanity... Baliff, bring in the next witness..

M3 is lighter which means it will handle better. it's readily available and much newer than the 8 series which will most likely make it more reliable. also has plenty of aftermarket if you'd like to play with it. the 8 doesn't have a whole lot. the M3 miiiight get pwned by the 8 if the 8 is a V12 on a highway speed contest, but throw some corners in front of the V12 8 series and it will fall flat on it's face.

I'm sure the 8 handles fairly well though. Don't scare em. and the 8 is sexy. the 3 is well, like the runt of the litter in comparison.

ehhh.. i think the 8 series is more the runt IMO. the M3 is a pure bread Nürburgring monster. manufactured for a REAL driving experience. the 8 series is more of a status symbol as far as i can see. i mean, if you don't have a job and your dad is helping you out with getting a car, who's gonna pay for the maintanence/repairs on that V12 lump? spend a few grand on the M3, maybe a top quality turbo kit, and i guarentee the M3 will be spitting flames past the lanky 8.

Ditto!

Also, if I was told to choose from the M3 E46 and the 8.... I'd take the M3 without thinking twice. Everyone's got their own taste and needs:D

that would be why they make vanilla, chocolate and strawberry Ice cream. each his own taste I guess. I prefer sexy sleek, over chunky short, myself. good luck with whatever you decide though.

Can't resist weighing in here... I own an E46. One bad thing about the E36s are the rear suspension mounting points. They tend to fracture with age, and the car is junk. Be really careful if you go that route. BMW has been in litigation for years over this issue. Just a point.

My 2001 330Ci with 25,000 miles has been flawless, and, around town, it's about 90% of the M3.
