I am needing to replace my 98 ML320. I would like to buy a slightly used 06/07 ML350. Can anyone tell me what to watch out for? One of the cars that I am looking at had the transmission replaced at 26,000 miles. Is this common. It was done by the dealer under warranty. What other problems have people experienced? Recalls? My 98 did 196,000 miles and I had it the entire time. I would like similar results from this new car. thanks.

Wow - no response. Its good to know that Mercedes corrected all the W163 problems. I shouldn't hesitate buying a W164 then!

Based on my ownership experience of just over 1 year on a CPO 2006 ML350 CPO:

. power steering fluid leak
. rear brake light assemblies
. false seat belt warnings
. excessive brake dust and poor brake modulation at low speeds

Above items are fairly common. Basically the major mechanicals are very reliable.

Took delivery of my 06 ML500 in Sept 05. No issues at all since new. The biggest thing to look for is the rough trans downshift to first when slowing. Thats also an easy one to fix although I did not experience it.

The 2007+ MLs are very reliable with few reported problems. I have heard of some issues with the 2006 model year that have been corrected by 2007. If you have your choice, try to get a 2007 or newer. You shouldn't have any big problems, but I suppose you could experience little things that will be covered under warranty.

Thanks. I will be test driving an 06 tonight. Still trying to make up my mine. It has had some transmission work, but the dealer says it is under warranty until Dec.
