hello Mbrs ,Im need some help to identify what this tubes are, inspecting my 190E 2,3 1985 im found four stainless steel tubes or pipes wich goes from each exhaust out to a cocentraiting aluminium deviece located under the alternator(it looks like a valve) ,from there it is conected first by a hose then by a pipe to the back part of the air cleaner ,the car also has egr valve in the upper part of the manifold ,but im cant found any information about this mistery system.
any help will be appreciated

Never knew these cars came with EGR systems... maybe it's an aftermarket one?

Could you post some pictures possibly?

it sounds a lot like an air pump from an air injection reaction system. basically it was an archaic smog device that doesnt work well. it injected filtered air directly into the exhaust in the hopes that it would continue combustion and reduce hydrocarbons... notice that this system is not used anymore....

Thank You ,Scott ,im think it is as you tell ,let me ask you ,do you know how this old systems are called?: im thinking about taking it out because it looks as it works in the opposite direccion and start to damage the air cleaner plastic cover instead of injecting air into the exhaust it conduce fire to the air cleaner!!!!!
it looks like something dangerous .

thanks Again Andrew

it's often called a smog pump or an AIR pump. Hmmm. depending on the smog laws- i know on a toyota i once had i disconnected the AIR system and had no adverse affects- granted it didnt require it for passing smog though. so i'd find out what the smog laws are where u are. if you plugged em it wouldnt be too bad i guess.

Andrew, do you see a possibility of posting some pics? Now I'm really curious on how it looks and works.

Hello Matteus, thanks for your intrest ,im will try to take some pictures of the system ,but definitelly its not working ,im suppose it must have something like reed vaves in the device where the four pipes are concentrated and it works sucking fresh air when the exhaust valve close, but in this case most of the reed valves may be damage because im have gas from the exhaust in the air cleaner .
yesterday i was very ansious to take out the device and inspect it but the niples are rusted and im cant go with it ,im will be working in it during the weekend if i can so we will keep in touch .

thank you all for your great help !!

Hello Mbrs. finally im take the device out and in fact the reeds vlaves where destroy ,so im must fix it ,the flaps rests where completely irregular so im put them in the lathe to true it ,im mill an adittional support for the flaps ( also new) ,you can see the hole work in the pics ,at least it works but im think its a very poor design (part of the original flaps support apears in the air filter ,too bad).
hope you enjoy the pics and thank you very much for your help

Thank you, Andrew!

It looks like a very strange system indeed. I haven't heard of it ever. Does it mention a manufacterer on it?
Well, I'm happy that you got it fixed.
Have you checked your inlet manifold for sludge/soot build-up?

greetz,

matteus
