I've recently bought a 1985 5.4L AMG W126 SEC Widebody here in New Zealand. It has 69,000km on the clock & is in excellent order (see images), but no history other than it was imported from Japan in 2005 at 67,000km. There's a Japanese oil change sticker from Dec '98 when the mileage was 43,000km. The mileage certainly looks legit given the condition of the car & how well everything works but I'd love to find out a bit of it's history prior to arriving here. Does anyone have any advice on this? The VIN is WDB1260441A179770. Also there's a number on the fusebox under the bonnet - 126 540 00 82. Does anyone know what this number refers to?

Best of luck tracking down the history, since the current AMG and Mercedes have virtually no easily accessible records (or parts) of the pre-merger cars.

Very nice score on that AMG! She is a beauty. The number you listed is the Mercedes part number for the fuse box. Should be a second set of numbers listed directly below this one.

Good luck with your new SEC. I know you will enjoy it.

Cheers,
Greg

Good morning Caspernz,

What a great looking car! What a find! It appears that the previous owner(s) took great car of it.

You may be able to have your local MB dealer run the VIN and find out which dealer ordered and accepted delivery as a new car. Then find out if there are any service records attached.

You may also try http://www.amg-club-japan.jp/ as they may be of some help.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Drive it with "con brio".

That's a real, real nice one. The only thing you can do is check the books in the glovebox for a name, or the "Imported by" in the door jamb (at least it's there for US cars). Without any papers with a name or a shop or anything, you're hosed.

Actually I can't make the link work - are you sure it's this link? I've tried to google as well but it doesn't come up with anything for the AMG club Japan?

CasperNZ,

I had the same problem and I thought it may be a problem from my end.

Let me try one of my Japanese contacts. It may take a few days but I have confidence.

Sit tight.

CasperNZ,

Sorry for the delay. My contact had changed his e-mail address. I talked with him just an hour ago. He'll work on my request in the next day or so.

I'll keep you posted.

Stunning vehicle. If this is the one that was on TradeMe for a while up until recently, then I looked at the ad many times longingly wishing I was back home so I could go and look at it :) Glad to see it's gone to an enthusiast.

Take good care of it ;)

Hello CasperNZ,

A bit of a challenge getting through to those folks. I have a contact name now. Sort of like the quest for the Holey Grail.

I'll keep plugging away. Keep the faith!

Thanks - it took a couple of weeks to get used to the left hand drive but all OK now. Trouble is keeping it under the speed limit - it doesn't like doing under 120km!

Caspernz,

How are things in my favorite city in the world, Auckland NZ? Great looking car and very well-maintaned. Your car is either equipped with AMG parts which they sold through lots of after-market dealers around the globe or was manufactured by AMG (pre MB).

There are very few pre 1999 AMG built cars around and most of them just have AMG parts added on by owners. In either case, the parts are from AMG and if that makes it an AMG is up to the owner.

Enjoy your car, she is a beauty.

CasperNZ,

I hate to admit but I am not having any luck so far.

Using your VIN, all I could find from the local dealer is that it was a EU car.

I used my local Japanese contact to try to get a response from the Japanese website, no response.

I tried contacting two gentlemen listed as contacts for the MB Club of Japan. This info came from the factory MB site in Germany that lists all affiliated clubs worldwide. No bounce backs either. It's like there's a black hole for obtaining info.

If you PM me, I'll pass those two names along to you.

If I should eventually get a response, I will certainly let you know.

Good luck and let me know what you find.

Mike K.
