Hi folks,

I recently bought a 1988 Merc. 500 SEL. The thing is that the "500 SEL" trunk lid badge is missing. 3 qs:

1) Where can I buy this badge from? (Any online stores?)

2) Is it easy to affix this badge to the car? (How does one do it?)

3) What may be the reason that the badge is missing in the first place?

Info would be much appreciated!!

you ca get it at the dealer, could be missing cuase of a new paint job, its double sided taped on. When putting back the sticker, it goes on the left side of the trunk lid just little less than an inch above the edge.

i'd suggest leaving it off. looks much nicer and surprises the hondas.

what year is the car? certain years had badges that were affixed with pins. of course you can just buy a newer adhesive style badge.

I second eddie's recomendation. Looks far cleaner w/ the badge removed, unless your's was affixed w/ said pins.

Since this is a 1988 500sel.. its a euro car. Most euro cars don't have model name emblems fixed to the cars.. they came this way. It was up to the first owner whether he or she wanted it or not. Post-1986 badges are afixed with adhesive... while many, but not sure if all, older (pre-1986) have prongs that hold it to the deck lid.

I vote to put the badge back on, keep it original.
I second that... A W126 without its badge seems rather naked to me.

Removing the badge was optional when ordering a W126 back in the days. So if the first owner didn't want one that car probably never had one.

This option didn't cost anything [8D]

Personally I like it better without the badge.

Cheers

Hi guys,

I just wanted to thank you all for your advice and suggestions, re the badge. I have yet to see my 500 SEL, because it's currently on its way to me from Germany...once it arrives, I'll know whether it's the pin type, or adhesive type, badge which I need. [;)]

Forget the 500SEL badge...stand out like many did in the 80's...

Use the 1000SEL badge. It makes all wonder WTF is under your hood. Around my way here in NYC, most limos of that era sported the 1000SEL badge.

Funny but true.

Hi Iceblue and other fellow Benz owners!!

LOL, the idea of getting a "1000 SEL" trunk-lid badge really got me laughing.....I agree, the look on people's faces thinking it was a 10 litre car would be a 'blast'.

Thanks for the input. [8D]

I'm down with the "bare naked ladies" crowd[8D]. I bought my 93 300SE debadged already, and just loved the clean look back there. JUst got a 97 S320, and am know plotting on debadging it. I debadged my the "190E" badge on my 190E 2.6, but all those years of that adhesive lfet some super hard gunk behind[V]

PERSONALLY, I'd leave it off. I took the badge off my 560 because the adhesive was starting to fail and the painted underline had chipped and faded.

I like both looks, but debadging it has the added "stealth" advantage. People assume it's slow until they try to race me, at which point they realize "oh s**t, that's not a diesel!" [:D]
