Not a tranny problem if the speedo works it is getting impuse .. must be a mechanical..

yep...

I think there is a gear that breaks on these... I ve seen it for sale on ebay if I am not mistaken...
If it has the early speedometer it could be the gears, the later is digital, but both are driven off the front wheel ABS sensor and then routed to the cluster, it recieves electrical impulses.
hey look on the bright side...your car isnt adding anymore miles to it lol

I like how you think lol

oh, all of them are digital, even the oldest 1991 ones get the signal from the LF ABS sensor.

the gear I am talking about prevents the trip meter to register #s on the counter...
The trip and odometer are analog. I just found out the car is supposed to display the outside temperature at the bottom of the cluster (not working).

Possible scenario:
Could the LF ABS censor fail. Info for the speedometer is comming from the other speed censors (right front side and rear)?

Where can I find the gears? I have found the left front wheel speed sensor (axcle spindel) is this what you are talking about bayhas? I have attached a pic from alldata,

The MPG indicator works fine (miles pr. gallon).

Could there be a fuse for trip, odometer and temperature? searched alldata.com without success.

Thanks

User in2dwww wrote me a message saying he had a simular problem - odometer not working - he said it was the gear inside the instrument cluster.

I found this site where 993 aficionado owner describes the repair/replacement of the gear.

How to fix a broken odometer

I will try to take out the instrument cluster (did it a few months ago, with out knowing what to look for). And see if the gear is broken.

Took out the instrument cluster, removed the speedometer/trip/odometer unit from the instrument cluster, and found that the gear was brooken.

Have ordered a new gear from Odometer Gears | 72 Croatan Road | Newport News, VA 23606 | 757.593.3478 they also have a step by step manual on how to make this operation without breaking anything.

Thanks for your help - leading me into the gear direction ;-).

I will make reply when I have received the gear and put it back in the car.

Just a thought..The gears are made to be inoperative if a person tries to wind the clock back to reduce mileage shown..otherwise they never break they are a non loadbearing unit..
Hi,

I have now changed the gear and put the instrument cluster back in the car - my trip and odometer now works ;-)

Thanks for your input
