Does anyone know if a '87 420SEL and '91 300SE have the same rear tranny/gearbox?

Thanks

Kalifornia replaced the tranny in his 420SEL a few days ago. He might know.

Actually, I just changed out a 722.324 for another, but the 300SE would have been my next choice.

I am having quite severe clunking problems, felt most prominently in the back when you shift into D from P/R/N, the rear end will drop. And when in D, as the gear shifts, it will clunk.

In this case, what is the best transmission to put into these cars?

Before you spend the money on a trans, take a look at the flex discs. That sounds just like the symptoms of a worn/ torn flex dic. You may only have to buy two discs and pay for installation.Around $200 and you may be fine.

It's always a good idea to replace them when you put in a new trans anyway. Also look at the condition of the trans mount as well, it will give off weird engagement characteristics.

Save money if you don't have to spend it.

Regards,

What parts are there in the rear end of the transmission that could be checked?
