My transmission is stuck at 2nd or 3rd gear. The CEL is on. A few weeks ago, my car did not start after many cranks. Ever since, it has been starting, but with a little hesitance. AFter asking the forum, I believe it was a CPS problem. I was planning to fix this problem during Thanksgiving break (next week).

I doubt the CPS issue is related to this and the CEL is on this time because of the transmission problem, most likely. Any ideas? I'm going to learn how to check for transmission fluid levels now to see if that's the problem, since for as long as I can remember, there has always been a small oil leak of some sort when left in park.

any ideas what this could be?

You are pushing the envelope on both these issues. Continued cranking of the engine eventually takes its' toll on many parts.

The transmission issue is even worse. Hopefully your are not driving this truck on a reular basis.

The codes must be read to pinpoint the transmission problem. If your work or go to school in White Plains, I can recommend an independent in North Wh. Plains to read the codes and if you wish, repair the problem.

I would take up 43's offer on the referral in White Plains. Don't let this turn into failure
that could be financial misery versus a few hundred at worst.

Not shifting out of second gear with CEL on usually means limp mode. This is a safety feature and the transmission may be OK. You do need to read the fault codes to get anywhere with this problem.

How I solved - Stuck in 2nd Gear

Hi All,

I have a 2004 ML270 W163 that suddenly got stuck into 2nd gear and would not shift out.

I replaced the battery, checked the "Kick-up" button underneath the gas peddle and even checked any wiring if there was any issues.

I even reset the shift setting by doing the reset procedure.

Nothing worked

Eventually I took it down to the local garage and he found a few codes on the transmission (unfortunately I did not get to record them) and he cleared those. He used a Snap-On code module computer thingy.

He checked and cleared all other codes and it worked, he re-checked it after and the codes never returned.

My suggestion is to bring it down to you mech and see if that works AUD$60 worth it!

Sounds far from fixed, but you'll find out soon enough. Make sure he writes down the codes next time.

I first had limp mode due to a failing battery, but it cleared with ignition off-on. If yours was stuck, you might have a bigger problem.

Welcome to the forum.

He did mention the w163's tend to be picky with oil changes etc and it alleviates the issue.

But fingers crossed it doesn't occur.

Ill check back in a month

If your truck went into limp mode once and the only corrective action taken was to clear them they'll be back. The codes showed up for a reason. Clearing them without investigating leaves the question of why unanswered. Hopefully you are correct. Good luck.

I'll keep you guys all up to date with it, however, i did fail to mention it was recently serviced by a MB specialist and he did not tell me of any issues.

I do not know if it was related, but just prior to it getting stuck in 2nd gear, I just added a new dashcam that morning which was plugged into the 2nd lighter socket in the front (located under the glove compartment). My phone charger kept playing up, would charge then stop, then charge, then stopped once again and that's when it got stuck in 2nd gear.

Again, I'm no mechanic, just trying to piece together what I did differently in the past 10 years for this to occur.

Perhaps it was all of the above or just a coincidence.

In anycase, I'll keep you all updated a month from now and tell you how it's going.

PS love these MB forums, should have joined long time back!

I agree with Dr X and vvrjrlaw. Simply clearing codes and not getting proper diagnosis will lead to said codes re-appearing again at some point. Thats not solving your problem. If I were you I would invest in a scan tool that reads transmission codes.:smile
