I was driving down the highway yesterday and without forwarning or any abnormal behaviour I get a message on my GL450 saying: Transmission malfunction, do not shift and go to MB service station.

Well, I can't stay at 65mph forever and the car shifted normal, thus I return home (could not drop everything to drive to MB, specially not at night) and park the car in the garage.

Transmission does not appear to go normally to Park

Tried to start car later, engine runs perfectly normal, but can not shift out of Park into either N or R or D (almost appears as if the button is not working).

Now I have a car that is stuck in the garage (which is not tow-truck) accessible and I have a problem .....

Any ideas from you, has this happened to someone before?

Well - in good old Mercedes 'stuff breaks and we don't really care' fashion, I got the note today that the "transmission servo motor' is broken and needs to be replaced - $1595 ....

The only good news is that this is the last repair on the car - I am done with it

Sounds like you ISM motor isn't working. As soon as you stopped the truck and shut it off it will not come out of park. ISM's are known to go bad. Only way to get them to move is to have a special freewheeling adapter hub installed between the wheel and rotor(special MB tool, some tow companies have them) or call MB roadside they should have one also. The tow company can then put it on the tow truck.

With the truck running, in the instrument cluster is the P highlighted or is nothing highlightex at all?
