hello guys I'm back again......so my 05 sl500 transmission won't engage when I put it on drive or reverse. the car hasn't been turn on for about 2 months without a rear battery. i just put a new {rear} battery but the car now its acting up. the convertible won't open all the way. only the trunk part goes up.the push button { on the shifter } to start the car doesn't work either. please guys help me out!!! the car has no check engine light, but it does have the air bag light on. Also where can I buy a sds scanner ? Any links will be appreciated! I live in North Jersey. I can pay for your help if you live around the area. help please

I don't know for sure but all these issues may be caused by not having a battery in the rear for a period of time, and if so then reprogramming will probably fix it all. Good luck.. I'm sure someone who knows will join the thread with some good answers soon.

where in North Jersey are you? I'm an R129 guy in central Jersey but have a C3 setup - only thing is that I haven't needed to plug it into my car yet and I basically got it expecting to move to an R230 at some point. My car hasn't set a light in 4 years (knock on wood). If you aren't too far, can come by and give it a shot. Admittedly, I don't know what we'd be looking for and have only surfed around on SDS to make sure it works. So if you have some insight into what needs doing, I'm happy to help.

now my problem is that the convertible top doesn't want to fully open. just the trunk goes up and everything stops after that.

There is a service tool that you can buy, it is a transmission measuring dipstick meant to be used to fill the transmission but after it's filled properly, I think there's a specific procedure, can be found; then you remove that tool and put the little plug back on the filler tube. The dipstick tool is only meant to be with the car for the purpose of filling the transmission. That tool can be bought for around $20 I believe I have one I've never used yet, and may never use, but good to have I guess... As for the top, maybe after a bunch of tries it may go up/down all the way? Was the car parked for a while unused? Maybe it just needs to be driven a little bit then things might normalize... These things have weird computer brains that like normal battery voltage and amps to be on an even keel -that's why I got mine a battery tender for the battery in the trunk for when it's parked for longer periods. Finding a fellow Benz nut who has an SDS would be a good thing

A MY2005 SL500 will have a 722.9 7-speed transmission. It has no dip tube to use a shop tool stick for level checking. Its a bit more complicated to fill and check the level as it is all done via the drain plug on the pan. To fill, you have to pump fluid in through the drain plug and to check the level, you have to observe the drip rate from the drain plug.

Yep, that and a simple hand operated fluid transfer pump will do it.

WOW, I never thought I'd see the day where you fill a transmission fluid through the drain plug hole!!! That's amazing. I hope mine never needs filling! Leave it to Mercedes to come up with head scratchers like this!

It's not just MBZ - many modern cars are this way. The Aisin transmissions used in many other makes is the same way. I am not sure about ZF. Deleting the dip tube is the result of trying to save weight. Of course deleting the dip tube may save just a pound, but this gets into the politics of the 2025 CAFE requirements for 54.5 MPG. Of course almost no cars will get 54.5 MPG, but cutting weight earns "extra credit" for "trying", so every pound counts.
