I have a 2004 Mercedes s430 (not AMG). I have 160,000 miles on it.

Recently, it has developed a shuddering vibration coming from the transmission (I believe). It shakes the dashboard.

This vibration occurs typically around 1700 RPM when going from 2-3 gear, but can happen also around 40mph and is somewhat random. Going slightly uphill makes it worse.

Driving in manual mode seems to make the problem "less worse" but it still occurs; however, usually in 6th gear.

Anyone have any ideas?

When did you have your tranny serviced last time, and when was the transmission mount replaced?

Happened to mine too. Change the flex disc and trans mount (both were bad ) fixed the problem

I had the trans mount replaced about 4 weeks after it started and it's still doing it, but I've heard about the flex disc issue before.

Could it be the flex disc alone? I've also heard about contamination in the trans fluid.

I appreciate the answers. This forum is really great.

My E class did that untill I replaced the trans mount and one of the engine mounts.

A failing flex disc can cause vibration. So can a failed engine mount.
