Hello everyone--first post.

I own a 1984 Diesel 300 SD with 234K miles. The only people who have owned the car include my dad, my dad's best friend and now me. Today in Atlanta I was driving along and the engine began to race and I couldn't shift out of what seemed to be 3rd gear. Over the past few days I have had to rev the tach to about 2500 to 3000 rpm for the gears to engage both in Drive and Reverse. Have I just bought my childhood dream car only to need to get the transmission rebuilt?

Thanks.

Welcome

No. Flaring – all rev and no go – is common with MB diesel transmissions of this era and mileage. The most common cause is a leak somewhere in the vacuum system. Even a leak in the door locks can cause the transmission to flare. Check also the cable adjustment and linkage.
