all,

my 2000 E320 shifter will not move out of park so i used a pen and released it manually as described in owners manual.

transmission works fine just will not release out of park....car runs and drives perfect and shifts perfectly.

**anyone have any idea what the part is that needs to be replaced??...i assume it is located somewhere under the brake pedal??

happy turkey day to everyone!

I had the same problem with my car about a year ago. Problem was a broken piece of plastic inside the shifter module that slides back and forth when the shifter is moved. I had to replace the shifter module. Took an hour or so to do it.

Commonly it can be the brake switch, or caffeine/sugar drink contamination of the shifter - those are the (2) most common problems.

most probably the brake light switch. It is located above the brake pedal. Try using contact cleaner on it and hopefully wouldn't need a new switch.

.. and if a new one is needed, they are about $18 at autohausaz - maybe under $30 at the dealer...

solenoid

when you go looking at the 'spill' problem with the shifter also look at the solenoid. if you haven't had a ball of problems with the ECU/TCU (under the hood) there would be no need to do an adaptive reset. Always find it a good idea to put pep back in the shifting.
happy holidays,
d.
