After doing a few of these bushings previously....and having to do it again today on my other 300dt, I finally sat down today and looked at most of the postings on the easiest way to do this without hurting my fingers. Karugs actually helped inspired me to post this...to help others....as this forum has helped me. I realized that it's because of forums like this and others (eg dieselgiant) that allow us to maintain our cars inexpensively. So, here's my contribution to the question on what the heck contraption do I use to press this bushing in. I came up with basically a long bolt, 2 washers, a large socket that will allow the busing to fit into the opening and a nut. If you look at my pictures, you will see the way it's set up. Just use two wrenches and tighten it up and you will be amazed as to how easy it goes in. You can use this contraption under the car for the other bushing - the one under the shifter lever where you have a little more space. What I've shown here is for the forward bushing which I had to remove the bracket (no choice) to press this in. A picture is worth it's weight in gold. Hope this helps folks. Keep the ideas coming!

I thought my explanation was off, glad to see it was enough ;)
I guess you could buy this other one from them for $16.50 plus shipping. I've never used the one from mercedesource but I'm sure it will do the same trick. Any little input helps all of us. Thanks.

That's the one I bought. I didn't realize back then that it was so simple. Kent even called this his "secret tool" or something. I mean if he posted the images before, I didn't have to go through buying this item knowing how simple it is. Oh well, at least the group knows about this tool now and how easy it is to make.

Winston, where does the other bushing go? I haven't had the time to check under the car yet and replaced only one.
Karugs,

I believe one of the bushing...the one where you have to remove the bracket is on the driver's side and right next to the middle of the transmission pan (again, on the driver's side). Use a 10 mm wrench and loosen the bracket as you see in my picture. After loosening the nut, you must remove the bolt to enable you to remove this bracket. This bracket will drop down and you'll then be able to access the safety clip and remove the lever from the bracket.

As for the other bushing, it's located right below the transmission shifter tunnel. I just put my Paw (hand) in there and take the safety clip off and insert my tool and press the bushing in. I had my daughter help me once before because she has smaller hands to reach for the safety clip.

I hope this answers your question Karugs. Thanks.

How did you end up replacing that last shift rod bushing? I can't get my hand in there at all just my fingers. You think there is something I could remove to make my hand fit up in there easier. The old one is still in there but it is cracked and old (will have to remove it as well).

Karugs did you ever get around to doing this as well? I replaced the other three bushings no problem (thanks 79Mercy). But this one is definitely the hardest to change out, just no room up there.
When I replaced the one on the SD, I just trimmed the one side of the plastic and popped it on.
Not easy to get to, I put the lever as far back as it would go and did it under the car. The SD has a tunnel under the drive shaft to make that much more fun.

I went to a local shop and had them do it. It was a critical time in my schedule so I had no choice but to pay up...for that simple fix.

Yes, the first 3 are doable from the cabin. Mercy provided great photos of his DIY.
Thank you, Winston. You really saved my life!!! How clever !!!. Thanks again.
Great idea and free
Was thinking of another way too. Still on the pressing in theme.

could just use the socket, the large washer on the bush and a G cramp.

I’m sure that would work, same principle. That’s what I’ll be trying, picking the bushes up tomorrow
