Can anyone point me where to find the serial number on a 460 series automatic transmission? Can it be seen with the tranny in place?

If the transmission is original, you can enter your VIN at this website:

http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

and it will give you the serial number of the transmission that it shipped with from the factory.
