My 1996 e320 has around 180,000 miles. Sometimes when I put it in to drive or reverse it shall I say lingers? Ad recently the car hasn't been shifting. It shifts from 1-2-3 fine just cant go into 4th. Any help appreciated. Past experiences help
Your problem is your getting fluid leakage past the valve-body piston/sleeve. If you take it to shop, more than likely they want a full rebuild since you will be expecting a warranty, and they will not be able to give you a warranty to fix just valve body, plus you have to many miles on the clock.
A rebuilt valve body is about $1000 bucks.
This is a great alternative, and a great fix for those that have the rev-up in between gears, or not getting into gear(I'm assuming you have no grinding/whining/top-off with fluid, and the filter has been changed recently). The fix is about $70 bucks in parts, but you need to get the valve body out(does not require transmission removal of the car). It is the similar process to remove the conductor plate.
I was able to just remove my valve body and conductor plate and clean everything up to get rid of some sluggish shifting. Checked out the solenoids and cleaned them too. I did it all at the time same time as a trans fluid change and changed the plug adapter too to stop a leak. PO never changed the fluid and at 190k it was pretty bad in there.
The fluid first, All your fluid must good standing, and your filter too. Do not do a power flush from Jiffy Lube, or any other place. Also, you must change the filter too. If you can drain the torque converter great.
Do not use fluid from the Mercedes Dealer, but use this Shell 134 fluid.
I'm not sure if you are a DIY'er, but you will need a transmission dipstick tool for the 722.6 transmission
Before you go nuts changing your oil and filter. Go to the Mercedes dealer and have print a specification sheet of your car from the VIN number as you may either have a 722.6 or 722.3 transmission. On the sheet the front sheet it will have the number.
As Kmani said, If you have a 722.3, You need to use Mercon/Dexron III
