I have a 1999 E320 sedan. The transmission is makeing a grinding noise when in neutral. Is it safe to drive to the service department?

Don't drive it in neutral[:p].

Maybe the transmission is not actually in neutral. Best way to find out is to find a level parking lot and put the car in neutral and see if it moves on its own.

If it is a short trip and you don't hear grinding while driving I would drive it to the mechanic.

Wow.
I'm baffled.
Dave, did I miss the recommendation that one should ignore transmission noises? Is the thinking that it started on it's own, so it will go away on it's own? ;)
alweaver, if the noise just started and it's not too extreme, you should be okay driving it to the shop. Just curious as to mileage and how often you've changed the fluid?
Good luck and let up know the outcome.

I agree with Greg - drive it carefully to a well recommended transmission specialist or Indy shop that know Mercedes. You can always try a dealer, but be prepared for them to try and sell you a new, or factory re-built, transmission. How about the mileage and tranny service history?

Try? You're so cute when you're naive, MM. I've yet to be in a dealer -- any dealer, any make -- that did transmission rebuilds. The best you could hope for is them R&R - ing the box and sending it to a good rebuild shop. Sadly, due to economies of scale, it's almost always significantly more expensive to have your box rebuilt than to buy a rebuilt one. Wasn't that acarter who got one recently for like $2,700? BTW, drifting OT for a sec, I had dinner last night with McBear, understand you get to see him occasionally. You'll like his new toy. :)

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Greg, you misunderstood me. My dealer doesn't rebuild transmissions either, but they R/R with factory rebuilt ones, and that's what I meant. McBear and I had lunch once in his stomping grounds, and he was driving a 500E that I might commit murder (not him of course) to have. ;) As to his new toy, are you talking about the Katrina MB? He told me it would be in action by about now, so I'll PM him to see what you're talking about.
