dex III will do fine. Make certain you do not overfill the transmission. That is a no, no for sure. Check the level with the transmission warm on a flat surface.
I personally would never flush a transmission, it's just asking for trouble. Draining the torque converter and changing the fluid in the pan manually is the way to go.
GM took away the licensing to the term Dexron III so you have to read the fine print, or ask a good store person. It should say something about formerly Dexron III in the fine print.
That's a NO on transmission flushing on a transmission in general and especially this nice and well made. Dex IId was the original fluid, but most have made the leap to Dex III with no problems. However, there's much controversy around backwards compatibility and Dex III. So much so, that a few of us switched to synthetics with the right MB spec #'s. My switch is still a work in progress, so I'd be reluctant to recommend....but at my mileage with an original trans, everyday it works is a good day!
No, the transmission wasn't spec-ed for synthetics, but that doesn't mean synthetics won't work in there.
Thanks for the advice everyone! I added the dex III, and am NOT going to flush the transmission. That was the way I was leaning, but thanks for firming it up for me!
Flushing is just the IHNTDDW (I have no time/down and dirty way) to bypass draining the torque converter/trans and using a new pan seal & filter. It's also a great way to throw metal particulates and sludge caught in your filter all over delicate, vulnerable parts.
"Flushing" to some means running a cleaning treatment through the transmission. Others use the term interchangably with "fluid exchange".
I agree with fluid exchanges but not flushing. Fluid should be changed every 30K.
