I have a 99 ML430 due for a tranny service. The dealer says "special fluid" at $15.00 a quart. Any reason dexron II or royal purple isn't fine?[?]

It is the Mercedes Transmission fluid. I would not use anything but what they say to use. Those transmissions are really touchy.

Mercedes had originally claimed that the trannys didn't need service since they used fluid that was synthetic. However, It's apparant that their views have changed.

My mechanic, whom I trust wholeheartedly, reccommmended MOBIL 1
ATF Synthetic Fluid. He said it is an equal quality with the Mercedes product for better than half price (His suspicion is that Mobil 1 IS the Mercedes fluid but I don't know this).

Many posts in this forum (search them and see) have used the Mobil 1 and have had no problems. Dexron III is NOT synthetic so do not use it!

If you wish to order Mobil 1 ATF synthetic, call 1-888-484-9560. The fluid is $6.49 a quart. I have seen it mentioned that it takes 7-9 quarts to change (you can't get it all out). Good Luck!
