I came home from vacation today and the first thing that I noticed when I put the garage door up was a few quarts of red tranny fluid on the floor.

The car previously hasn't left a drip or warning sign before this. Any idea where all of this fluid would be coming from especially since the car wasn't running while it leaked.

Yikes ! That's a bitch !. Lots of places for a tranny to leak. Unfortunately you gotta get the thing up in the air and look around. Way up front is usually cooler lines, Mid section is usually front seal behind torque converter, rear is pan or rear output shaft seal. All that said, it's curious that it was dry and you came back to that much leakage. Generally lines blow under pressure. Maybe a mouse chewed thru a tasty rubber hose ! There are other exterior penetrations like shift shafts, electrical connectors etc. Keep us posted !

+ One look at the filler tube O ring.
If you park the car for a long time the converter empty's in to the pan,
so the fluid level rises, that's how you got all that oil on the floor.

As a matter of fact that is the first place that I would look.
I always start from the easy ones....
O ring is $1.89. Lol.
The other cheap repair is the converter plug and crush washer.

Regards,
aam.

So i guess that my next step is to fill it with fluid, start it and see how bad the leak is. If not a fast leak I should be able to get it to the indie without towing. I guess we'll see.

Another option can also be the plug where it connects to the conductor plate. It has been know to leak and is a fairly easy fix.
1991 has 722.3 tranny, you re probably thinking of the infamous 722.6 plug leak, and wicking that causes the CPU to swim in tranny fluid if the plug is not repaired...

Well, I had the car towed this morning to my indie garage. Hopefully I'll find out this week what the issue was. His lot is packed right now. Incidentally, there were 5 other SL's there to be fixed! Here's hoping that it's a simple and cheap fix!!

I picked the car up today. They replaced the transmission module, transmission mount, fluid and filter. $407.00. So much for the leaky gasket theory. I was hoping for less. This is a thousand bucks in 30 days. 4 thousand previously by the previous owner in July so I should be happy lol.

The mechanic was gone for the day so i didn't get a chance to talk with him.

The work order just states what they did. Is it possible for a leak to be where the transmission module is? I'm not even sure what a tranmission module is.

The tranny module N15/1 is located in the module compartment.
(Right hood back corner, between the fire walls.)
If the plastic cover is loose/missing water may get in.

Module? your tranny is 100% mechanical and does not have modules...

Modulator maybe?

Ok, I spoke with the garage man. He related that it's listed as a module on the invoice, but it was the modulator on the side of the transmission that was leaking. He said that they replaced that and performed the other services.

Yes, the rest of the service is needed, you have to drian the tranny to replace the modulator, and its silly not to do filter and gasket while you're there...

Probably a couple of hundred dollars in parts and oil there, so it could have been worse. At least you didn't have to get your hands dirty for the other couple of hundred.
I bet when you saw that fluid on the ground a lot more $$$$$$$$$$$ where going through your head
