Just remember the Benz automatic fluid will always turn black very quickly due to the high graphite contents. That is normal and not an indication of a problem. Did you use the genuine MB fluid? If so, you can check and it's probably black by now. If you did not use the MB fluid, you can start saying goodbye to your tranny.
OK, it looks like crap, but what does it smell like? Smell is a good indicator of the fluid condition as well, sometimes better than looks.
If you want to get a REAL good idea of what's going on, have some of the fluid analyzed, it doesn't cost that much and it can either give you peace of mind, or a heads up on saving up some extra bucks...
Ive seen a few in the workshop I go to just like that. They tell me its normally what they see.
They just change out, new filter and go until the next change after about 30k or so.
The oil should stay transparent for a while. Any additives on the bands would of leached out by now.
A couple of years ago I sent a sample of ATF from my wife's ML320 at 35,000 miles.
The report came back saying the fluid although dark was still in good condition.
I'd had the fluid changed at the time and I resolved to leave it in until 100,000 miles basd on the Blackstone report. The ML320 is currently at 92K so it shouldn't be too long now.
