Well I have been speaking to the dealers.. they are all trying to tell me the clutch packs are worn and it needs a new transmission.. I asked them how a 100k car at 106k miles that looks like it's in great shape could have a worn out trans already but they have no answer.. One of them said there is no such thing as a trans re-flash for this car, and he's been in the business for 13 years and never heard of a magical reflash.. they both said if the adaptaion numbers are high it's compensating for bad clutch pakcs.. but when I told the last guy it just started after I bought the car he said it may be a switch or something minor.. he also said that just resetting the adaptaion and drivng normal will not do anything. It will just relearn it's same bad habbits.. he said I have to follow that process of going from each gear ten times or so.. I am really starting to get discouraged with this car.. Like I said I came from BMW where everyone knew what all the issues were, there was none of this guessing, or could be this, etc.. I don't know what to do first.. Ahh!

I'm really sorry to hear that, but it does sound like the standard dealer response when unable to actually diagnose. I have a hunch you don't need a transmission, but that issue would drive me crazy as well. I wish I had something to help you with. I assume you have already done this a bunch of times, but this was the only procedure I found on MBworld regarding a full reset:

"Also try reseting the transmission adaptations like this:

- Turn the ignition key to the "on" position.
- Press the gas pedal to the WOT position and hold it for 5 seconds.
- Now turn the key to the off position but don't remove the key.
- Release the throttle.
- Wait 2 minutes
- Start Car / Drive"

I'm going to see my MB specialist on Thursday, so I'll run everything past him to see if he's got anything to say. We're spending a lot of time together. Going through my old car records I noticed the only other car I ever dumped this much money into was my 99 E320!!

Thanks Doug,

I have done that about 4 times now.. actually I just did it again but this time I did the start stop 10 times per gear and then made sure to not turn the car off until over 10 minutes went by and so far it's about 95% better.. you can almost not even feel it downshift anymore but if you watch the tach you will see it fall, then stop for a sec and start falling again, so I know it's still doing it.. I just didn't like the fact that two SA from two different dealers said the clutchpacks were worn the second I mentioned the issue..

I really think a software update if they exist would do the trick.. I took the fuse panel cover off where my Airmatic relay is and I assume the big unit to the right is the TCM. It looked completely dry but the second plug from the back has the locking tab broken off so it's a very tiny bit looser than the rest, I tried taping it, but I don't really think that's the issue..

I wish I could find out if there is a software update for this darn trans!

What's the latest on this? Has the improvement continued?
It's been confirmed that our era car doesn't have software updates for the trans. So far after adapting it with the long way it seems to be alot better.. it is still there, but alot better.. I have changed 3qts of fluid twice, dropped pan changed filter, gasket, switch etc.. and filled with another 5qts., and now flushed out another 3qts. and it is still brown.. so 14qts down and it's still not perfect.. I was told by a friend that it could be the trans computer and they offered to lend me a used one out of another 00.. I read on this board that as long as it's from the same year I won't have to program, it's plug and play, can anyone confirm this? I may try this.. otherwise at this time I am all out of options..
