HI All,

My transmission on the 380 sec need replacement.

Will a 500 sec gen 1 gearbox be compatible with the 380 sec engine ?.

I have a spare 500 sec gen 1 transmission, so I hope it will be a straight forward replacement.

I await your comments and advise,

regards

C

check what numbers you have on the gearbox, i think you should have a 722.311 gearbox from that 500 SEC...

easy to go under and check what numbers your current gearbox has...

list of "al" mercedes automatic transmissions.
Mercedes automatic transmissions P/N 1969-2003 | Mercedes-Benz turbo

if it has the same number it should be a direct fit, wheather or not a gearbox with a different number should fit i cant say, but you could think that they on atleast a few only modded the inside, and thus should fit.

The 380 engine is renowned for being underpowered for this use. Get a Gen I 500 engine and tranny, then replace them both. BTDT in a 380SEL - transformed the car!!

Those are part numbers the number you need to find is the 722 XXX XXXX numbers to tell which model they are, it would tell you on the data card from EPC using the VIN numbers of both cars.

the Vin for 380 sec is 1260436A077014

The Vin for 500 sec is WDB 12604422004201

I would appreciate it if a forum member will kindly look up the transmission number.

I could not find this number on the transmission, any specific place to look?

but in the meantime, thanks in advance for looking up the info through a VIN check.

regards

It might function, but the shift timing and shift points might be wrong.

TBH, rebuilds from places like Silver Star Transmission are not that expensive. I wish I had gone that route with my car.

Transmission compatibility goes beyond just the numbers, you also need to ensure that the electrical and vacuum connections are also interchangable.

They varied differently between models and years and even varied year to year within the same models.

HI All,

for those of you who are interested. The 500 sec gen 1 transmission fitted perfectly on the Merc 380 sec engine.

Took car or test-drive and it drove perfectly and the transmission ran smoothly and selected ALL GEARS with no issues. kick down worked perfectly..
