Clarify "died".
Transmissions, depending on mfg variances, bad fluid, leaks, bad control units, and driving style all play a part...

Many of us have 98 or 99's well past 100k mile mark but many of us including myself advocate transmission fluid change. Do a search on that subject

Deffinitely...my died at 115k. Check my post "Transmission - Dealer - Help" for the details on that including a contact and price for repair.

Way to early in my opinion, however they tranny shop said that the clutches on all wheel drive automatics, if you drive at all agressively, will where. Cost 3300 compared to an audi quad atleast twice that.

99-2000 transmissions had have lots of upgrades because there were various issues with their reliability and certain parts design. I don't know yet 20001+ how they are..
