We recently purchased a 2008 GL 450 with 49k miles, but it didn't have a trailer hitch. My wife wants to have a hitch to transport bicycles. We won't use it for towing since I have a 3/4ton truck to tow things.

I can buy a new hitch for $850 at the dealer, buy a used one with hardware from a salvage yard for $450, or buy a Curt trailer hitch for $200.

I would rather not spend anymore than I have to but don't know if the aftermarket hitch has a downside or easier to install, etc. The Curt install at Rack and Road is $200 if I don't do it myself.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If its just for bicycles, what about the bick rack mounts that use web straps and clip into the top of the door? My sister had a cheap universal that she put in the back of her pathfinder years ago... If that's all you are looking to do with the hitch, it may be worth looking into just the bick rack.

Hitch

Thanks. I didn't think about going that route. My concern was having my wife try to lift the bikes up and place them on a rack. The lower the better.
