In Ohio, when you trade in a car, you only pay sales tax on the net difference between the new and used car. I traded-in a 2-month old SLK350 standard body for the SLK350 w/AMG package. I got all but $1K back of the original MSRP of the first car. I would have done better if I had not banged up the rear bumper. You would have to factor in this sales tax "credit" if you try to sell the car on your own.
In some cases you can convince the dealer to "pass thru" a deal to a buyer you find on your own. So if you find a buyer willing to pay $50K, you trade it in for a new car, save the tax and the new buyer buys the "trade-in" from the dealer. Usually, the dealer tacks on a "fee".
