hey, what is the most durable, tough, or hardest to break down mercedes that has been built? also up to how many miles can it keep going? when is the point that the car breaks down BEYOND repair? or can it keep going on indefintly as long as you keep replacing the worn out parts...i have seen some 1980s' 240D and 300D mercedes and they have tons of miles on the odometer, how is that possible? thanks in advancee

In all honesty, I'd say the early model 200D - 240D's with manual everything. They are really easy to work on, nothing ever breaks if maintained, but they aren't much for power.

The newer, more powerful turbocharged diesels are a little bit more difficult to work on, but the engines last just as long, and mechanically they are every bit as bulletproof.

The most recent diesel models, with age, will be no more reliable than any gasoline car, when time marches. The old diesels, of which I've spoken about, have no ECM. As you may already know, an ECM electronically governs the air and fuel ratios, emissions controls, electronic linkage, oil quality, etc.

The old diesels made do with a mechanical injection pump, an EGR (that could be bypassed), mechanical linkage that you could adjust, and an oil dipstick. All things that do NOT exist on current Mercedes diesels.

I totally agree with the above post, I would say its probally followed by the w126 SD. I know the generation before the w123 chassis (as posted above) had a taxi which over its lifetime exceed two million miles.

The 80's models don't have all those sensors, like ABS, airbags, traction, engine management, $2700 wire harnesses, that go bad every few years and so on.
But, what is going to kill lot of those cars is $130/hr labor charges with 2 hr for replacing light bulb.
Good luck for those, that have to pay mechanics.
