I have a 1999 ML-430 recently asked the torque settings for the valve cover. Before covering up the heads I would like to check and tighten the 20 head bolts. I do not know the torque settings & sequence, in the past I would start from the middle in a x pattern going out to the ends. I would appreciate some experienced advice. on the proper settings and sequence.

my mistake I should be more specific cylinder head bolts that hold the valve train: valve springs, Keepers , rocker arms, etc to the engine block. it takes a t-55 tork. 10-half of them are on the outside of the valve cover next to the spark plugs, 10 are on the inside on the cylinder head before you put the valve cover back on.

Cylinder head bolts do not become loose. Checking for the proper torque is impossible, especially on an aluminum engine, because they use what is called Torque to Yield bolts. They actually stretch when tightened. If a head has to be removed, for whatever reason, new bolts must be used each and every time. Don't worry about them and do not tinker with them.
