In the middle of sealing the top cylinders and cut one of the bow cylinder teflon piston seals trying to reinstall the piston. I have now turned out an install sleeve to prevent that from happening again but don't seem to be able to find a suitable replacement seal. Seems that all the o and teflon seal ring stores that I used in a former lifetime have gone out of business.

Any help?

If you search,
you will find old posts, some are mine.
I was able to repair a few of my top cylinders.
That was more then a decade ago, before Top Hydraulics.
I used a cone from a bicycle pump, it never leaked.

Years later, I asked Klaus for his assistance.
(Very pleasant personality, had fun talking to him.)

Most of the time the cylinders leak from the top seal, so you see the oil....
but there is more to it.

The piston seal. Pressure comes in from one side, piston extends, pressure comes from the other side, piston contracts.
I m not going in detail of how the system works.
Yes,
you have two valves that one closes the other opens, and so on.

Now,
if you buy the seal, you will be doing a half job.
Piston seals swell up, need more pressure, more pressure will damage the system.

Top Hydraulics replaces all the cylinder seals.
As far as I know, nobody ells does that.
Klaus prices, are reasonable, his service, is second to none.

Regards,
aam.

RKH, thanks for your reply but I have been around hydraulics for the better part of my life. I too did some questionable cylinder repairs many years ago. I found some Moen plumbing o rings that worked perfectly in the latch seals probably 10 or 12 years ago. When I started taking cylinders out the latch cylinders with the Moen o rings in them are the only cylinders that were not leaking. Klaus may be a really nice guy but I have never paid someone to do anything for me that I was able to do for myself, just the way I was brought up. As hydraulic cylinders go these are about as simple and straightforward as any I have worked on. The only issue I encountered was the piston seal in the bow extension cylinder, the way it is made you need to make an install sleeve to reinstall it, I now have one. When I did the one on the opposite side I was careful not to remove the shaft and piston, just popped the cap out replaced the seal and o ring and reassembled it.
Don't know why it did not occur to me right away that it was a simple matter to just machine out a new piston seal, took a half an hour to whack it out and reassemble the cylinder.
I did stop by the local Mercedes dealer, happened to be right around the block picking up something else. I asked the parts man if that seal were available. His answer was that they did not service that seal separately but for $1045.00 he could sell me a replacement cylinder, and he said it with a perfectly straight face!!
As I have stated in other threads I have posted I made the mistake of giving this SL to my granddaughter as a throw away first car so I need to fix it. But when she gets through with it I will never have anything to do with Mercedes again. I am as German as they come and have spent my entire life around the crazy krauts, I don't need to willingly do it.
