Hi everyone. I figured I'd make a post here because if I don't now, I never will. Just chronicling the issues and such I was having today.

Last Friday, I was driving my '79 300SD (116.120 w/ later 617.951/952). The transmission has been flaring since we bought it about 3 or 4 months ago. It was mainly the 3-4 upshift, but it started getting bad recently. Last week, it was very bad so I limped the car home by holding the gears manually and lifting the accelerator before shifting. I put the car up on jack-stands and broke out my ElringKlinger transmission filter and gasket kit I purchased from AutoHausAZ.com. I drained the pan and TC, dropped the pan and changed the filter.

The first hiccup is that the ElringKlinger transmission pan gasket did not fit. (I have a 4 bolt 722.120 transmission.) It was like trying to put a queen-size sheet on a king-size bed. I noticed the gasket did not have any part numbers on it either... I'm curious as to whether or not I may have been sold a counter-feit, so any advice or input on this would be welcome.

I put the pan back up and had to wait until Monday to get the new gasket from our local MB dealer ($8.44). I picked up the gasket yesterday and put it on the car. Due to the flaring, I was debating on using ATF Type F or ATF (Dex/Merc III). In the end I went with Dex/Merc III, and turned the vacuum modulator up 2 notches. Super easy to adjust the vacuum modulator on the transmission, so that was nice. I put fluid in (which was slow with that skinny dipstick tube) and ran it through the gears.

After I was satisfied with the level, I took it for a drive. 1-2, 2-3 upshifts were fine, but 3-4 still flared, pretty bad. I adjusted the modulator an additional full turn (8 notches) and took it for another driver. Closer, but minor slippage on 3-4.

Having had enough of this, I adjusted it a turn and a half (12 notches) and took it for a drive. Shifts are firm and no flaring. They don't kick into gear, which is good. The transmission may need the springs adjusted for the 3-4 upshifts and 4-3 downshifts since they seem to be too soft, but I don't know how to do this and will get into it later after doing some research.

Just wanted to post this here for anyone who may be going through similar issues, please feel free to comment and discuss.

On my '79 300SD it was a small aluminum key that was revealed after unclamping and removing the cap on the modulator. Passenger side, towards the front of the transmission.
