Ian, a parts 560 SEL with mushroom interior I bought has what appears to be fading around the pillars and card top edge surfaces (a reddish tint). The car was supposedly garage-kept most of the time, but still. Same thing, no matter what I tried it stayed faded, so I have to assume either sun fading or someone previously cleaned it with something too strong--does yours have a reddish fade in these areas?
Mushroom and palomino turn into pinkamino when not garaged

Some time-wasting idiot "bought" mine on ebay and after 2 days of messages and phone calls to them that went unanswered, they said "I appologize but I did not have any internation of buying your car." (spelling errors left intact)
Can't tell what the deal is, either they were drunk or they were trying to take mine off the market because now I have to wait 10 days for the cancellation to time out before I can relist it.
Block this person: gomercedes on eBay

Just off the top of my head (comparing photos)
  • 1991 model year (vs 1989)
  • Lower miles (68k vs 151k)
  • Car is kept original
    • Headlights left alone
    • Stock wheels left alone; new tires which are closest match to original tires
    • Stock bumper, turn signals, shifter
    • No added AMG badge
    • Car has passenger airbag, like it should for 1989. Euro cars and possibly non-optioned 1989 cars may still have glove box, but I would expect pass airbag
    • Original window sticker in amazing shape
    • All original documentation in beautiful shape, and stamped close to current mileage
      • Original radio code cards (came with 2) in the standard leather binder some dealers offered
      • Original leather key FOB in great shape (came with 2) and wallet key in plastic
    • Correct carpeting (yours is black instead of expected gray color)
    • Correct first aid kit
    • Trunk is clean and has expected items in brand new shape (red cloth toolbag, etc)
  • Flawless (IMO) pictures
    • Your pictures (partly because car is white) show lots of dirt. Some (like gas cap) almost look like rust at a glance
    • Paint for your car is hard to judge because it's white and pictures don't show the sheen
    • The person taking the pictures is either a dealer or a professional photographer
    • Photographs of the climate control working w/ temperature sensor
    • Paint thickness is shown at important parts
  • Wood in 1991 car is in immaculate shape
  • 1991 car has rare rear blind option
  • 1991 car is a rare and more desirable color combo
Your car is nice, but it's really not even a fair comparison. I'm sure the people on BaT would tear my car to shreds noticing small details and I've put a lot of effort into restoring the car with those small details in mind over the past ~3 years

When small original details are correct, it's a good indicator the car hasn't been messed with. When those have been modified, even if tastefully, it calls into question what else might be modified. This went to someone specifically looking at those small details
While I don't disagree with most of what you said, and I appreciate the perspective, it is still baffling how much more that one sold for than pretty much any other example on BaT, by a factor of 2 almost (regardless of trying to sell mine).
Having said that, I don't see how red over tan could be a more desirable color combo than white over grey.
When you think of the iconic 560SEC, its the all-white and all-black that get the movie spotlight, poster on the wall, etc.
Anyways, I will say that red one has a very clean engine bay, and very glossy wood trim inside - and the original window sticker is pretty cool!

Guess I need to get a paint thickness meter

I find this really interesting:

Knowing what I know now, and the fact that my wife drives the 420SEL usually, I would almost certainly bid on this if in the market.

The new owner should become a member of either the Citroen or Rolls-Royce club so that he can get help finding a competent mechanic for the hydraulic suspension.

Love the color of this one; Manganese Brown. What's that in German?

This looks like a very nice Drive Me Every Day candidate. Should be fun to watch the bidding.

That would be a very nice one to start with. California car is certainly a plus.

Insane example. A shame they are selling right now with the economy tanking.

Just imagine what the price would hit were the interior black!
