OK, just got back from my local Department of Motor Vehicles in Tennessee. This is the second time I've been in attempting to figure out how to get a title and both times I've been sent packing. The previous owners have somehow driven it without a title by bypassing state regulations. Of course my state will not do the same, so they have told me I have to submit a title or a manufacturer's certificate of origin (MCO). If I get a title, everything is good, if i get a MCO then I would have to get the previous owner to title it in his state and then transfer the title back to me.I course have neither, and the previous owners have neither. I do have all previous bills of sale and some other documentation. So my questions is how can I get a title, or a CFO?

I've searched already and this is what I came up with. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/uni...suggestions.html?highlight=title+difficulties I attempted to call U.S. title services whose phone number doesn't exist anymore. Von do you know if they are still around?
How much would one cost if they produce one for me?
Also, I don't want a bogus title that won't transfer easily, so what do you think the route to go with this is? Thanks for the help

I had difficulty getting a title for my 404 in Maryland. I eventually got it registered in a non-title state and then used that to get a Maryland title. Kind of a pain and cost a few hundred $.

Check out Broadway Title Co.

Broadway Title

Explain what you're trying to do and I bet they can help. Good luck.

check into a "self build" title. Every state calls it something else. Bascially it is the title issued for someone who build a vehicle out of pieces.

It might only require that you remove the cab and change a part out here and there. and put the cab back on. You just then have to have the rig inspected that it has all the proper lighting etc. for a vehicle that age.

Broadway Title is in some sort of difficulty right now - they must have lost a contact person somewhere or are under some legal scrutiny. I don't think they are doing their normal service at the moment.

If they clear it up, yes - I suggest talking to them.

Doesn't VT issue paperwork without titles ? Maybe find someone there to help you. I hope you haven't red-flagged your truck by being denied a title already. I know this can happen in the Republik of Kalifornia.

Do a bonded title its very easy, and should only cost a couple hundred buck. I can get any vehicle titled as long as it is not disputed by the previous owner if their is even record of an owner. Take it from me, Do a bonded title now and dont pussy foot around thinking you can do it otherwise. If your state does not do bonded titles, let me know, And we can work a deal to have it bonded here in New Mexico, and you can use the title to transfer to your state and name.

As long as you have insurance on the truck in your name (sometimes a little harder without it being registered, but J.C. Taylor and Hagerty both do them) you can run the truck through the state of Maine. It is a no brainer, costs less than $200 and it is done. Email me for the contact information of the titling service who is quite familiar with Unimogs. No need to re-invent the wheel, it is quite common for a vehicle to be completely legal, with no documentation.....people sometimes lose paperwork.

I have customers who have registered U1300's in the state of CA using the Maine plates/tags recently, and it was a walk in the park.

Doka, I've never heard of a bonded title. Can you explain what exactly it is? I'll go ahead and check if TN offers a bonded title on Monday since they're not open on weekends.
I'll also contact everyone else on the list to see if they're up to titling a Mog. Thanks guys.

A Surrety bond title is a title that is issued with an insurance policy to pay any person that claims to own the truck and has proof. However, to get one, you pay a service to search for ownership, and if non is found its a sure thing. However, if a previous own pops up, you have to send a letter notifying them that you have purchased their vehicle. This does not mean that they get the truck back if they wanted it though. The vehicle still remains yours unless proven stolen.

The $37,400 Dupage Airport 406 Case I tried to buy off Ebay last week did not have a title either. So I went to the Colorado DMV and inquired on how to obtain a title, they gave me the following form which explains the bonding process. Here in Colorado if the vehicle does not have any liens on it and is not stolen the process is pretty easy. I would imagine if Tennessee is difficult you could go through this process in a more lenient state first. Hope this helps. Steve
