So i picked up a 95 W140 S420 LWB.

I've got a set of AMG wheels that i'd like to put on it. They're 18x8.5 up front and 18x9.5 in the rear.

I know the rears should run 255/45 rubber.

my question is in relation to the front size tire and whether or not anybody knows for sure what, exactly, will trigger the ABS/ASR light.

i am considering running 235/40 up front, but i realize that's a hair over 6% difference in rolling distance.

does anybody know what the threshold for tripping the ABS/ASR sensor is so i know if i need to adjust tire size?

by contrast, running a 235/50 you get less than 1% difference, but i'm worried about clearance issues up front.

what sizes are you guys running?

a little help?

I doubt you'll have a problem with 235/50 18's. That'd be my choice in your circumstances.

Tire circumferences are supposed to stay within 3%, so going to a 6% difference would be radical enough to trip something. You'd find you cruise control would trip off over anything above an urban speed.

I ran 245/45 18's all round and they never touched.

You haven't stated the offset of the rims. If the front rims have an ET of 40+ you should be OK even if you lowered by 2" !

Yes, >3% is bad, so you SHOULD go for the 235/50 18's up front. You won't have any clearance problems with this tire size. It's small to what a lot of guys run, but it is a sensible choice for the S280 'Lady Di special'.

that's exactly what i suspected, i just wanted to make sure before i actually purchased and mounted the rubber.

thanks very much for the information, fellas.

can anyone recommend a place to pick up a good set of progressive springs? i don't want to go any lower than about 1.5". and i want to retain as much of the stock ride quality as possible.
