I have a 1975 450 SLC that I need to put new tires on. I am wondering if anyone has put anything wider than the stock 20570R14 on the standard rims.

Thanks Mark

Hi,

I have put 215/70R14 Dunlop D65Ts on. No problems, handling much improved.

If you have original 14" rims, i belive they call them bundtcake, 205 is stretching them to the limits.
Any wider tyre will have traction surface wider than original 8" (203mm) width rim which in return cause instability often reffered as "floating rim inside the tyre"

PS
just to add, as a better solution, i recommend using 16" rims say from 380SL or 560SL's and 225R16 tyres (/55 or /50)

Thanks for the input. When I took a close look I found that the present tires 205/70R14 had actually rubbed a bit on one of the suspension arms so I decided to stay with the stock tire size. I purchased some Yokohama Avid T4's but won't know how they drive until I get my seats back into the car.

Thanks again for the advice

Mark
