I need help with a unique situation. I just bought an 05 S 55 AMG, but I had the dealer swap out some five star AMG rims from another slightly older car because I like them better than the newer rims with the slots down the middle. They put the tires and TP sensors from my car on the rims from the 02 car...now I get the error that the "TPMS is not functioning, Return to Workshop". The dealer said this might happen, and sd there is nothing they can do, the sensors from the 05 car won't work on the other AMG rims, or something to that effect...Do I need different pressure sensors. Do I just need different sensors? You would think all AMG rims would use the same sensors...I really love driving this car, but its starting to become a pain in the butt.

I'm due for tires soon, and I'm going to have the sensors taken out and the TPMS disabled. For whatever limited value they are, they are a huge pain in the backside. I thought of buying new gen sensors that have kinetic generators instead of batteries, but the cheapest you can find are $80 a corner or so (from Tire Rack), and I just don't love the system that much.

Plus, with the batteries dead in the current sensors, I have to go through that nonsense of resetting the system every third or so start. Screw it.

That didn't respond directly to your question. I think MB went to 415 mh (or thereabouts) sensors in '05. From '04 and earlier, the sensors were 315 mh (or thereabouts). I don't know why putting the new sensors in the old wheels would keep them from working since the antennae and receivers should all "get" the sensor. Unless the wheel material creates some kind of interference (which makes no sense), I don't see why it wouldn't work. If you used '02 sensors, it would make a lot of sense. Are you sure they didn't put old sensors in your wheels?

Hello,
Do a search on this subject, I had my tire Sensors disabled on my 2004 S500 with AMG sport package by my MBZ dealer, they are a pain and costly. The batteries do not last long and you will get an error code on the dash.
Just enjoy your wheels and get the senors disabled.

the dealer sd that if it didn't work that I should put all the sensors in the spare, air the spare up with like 45 psi and then it will never generate the error again. Not very fond of rigging something up on a $100k car!

Find another dealership, or use a different service writer. That is some of the worst advice I have heard. I'd write the dealership about whoever told you that. First, the sensor pressure reading is in the valve stem--the sensors have to be installed to work. You can't just put them in an inflated tire. Second, 45 psi will set off the dreaded "you set the tire pressure TOO HIGH" warning which is the same as all the other errors you get. That guy is an idiot. I wouldn't let him within a hundred feet of my car.

And, not least, can you imagine putting the spare on the ground with four TPMS sensors rolling around inside? God, the mind boggles at the outcome.

It wasn't a MB dealer, high end used car dealership. In any event, is there any reason that the sensors wouldn't work with the older rims? That is what they are telling me. I asked him, "what about when people put aftermarket rims on their cars?" I'm just trying to put AMG rims from a slightly older model, same size 18"!!!!

Ah. Your man doesn't know WTF he is talking about.

Are you sure he put the sensors from your '05 car in the '02 rims? Did he give you the old sensors from the '02 rims? I believe (I don't know for sure--you need a positive source of information) the '05 sensors should synch right up when they are mounted in the old wheels. If not, someone with a STAR diagnosis computer should be able to synch them. I think you have been misled, either from stupidity or from greed. Either way, call the Mercedes dealership nearest you and ask them what you need to do.

Unless you have a long-standing relationship with the dealer, run away. High-end just means they are screwing people who can afford to waste money and who are unlikely to figure out they are being screwed. If you're inclined, throw a punch or two on your way out the door; they deserve it.

If you do have a long-standing relationship with them, close the Manager's door and throw the couple of punches he needs to bring him to a sense of reason. Then get him to fix your car.

If I'm dead wrong about all this, which is possible (but not likely), I'd really like to hear why the sensors won't work with your old wheels. It doesn't make any sense.

Took the car to a MB dealer in Houston and the svc writer sd that the sensors will never work right on my 02 AMG rims because the weight of the rim is different and it is my fault for switching to the older rims, so the only way to get the light to go out is to put back on the stock 05 AMG rims...sounds like a bunch of BS to me, they were too busy to help me!! Time to find another dealer for service.
