Timing marks - intake cam timing (HG job) - clarification needed

Okay, the part I do not understand in the below instruction from Brotherton's directions is where he says " Take the intake gear and turn it clockwise, looking straight at it from the front (don't move the cam).

Turn it clockwise until when/what? He does not tell you when/where to stop turning it. I do not understand this at all. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

GEAR ASSEMBLY
I've described how to get the sequence of assembling the gear on the intake cam right a number of times over the phone. The easiest way for me to explain it here goes like this: Forget the chain for the moment and place both cams on their doweled marks. Take the intake gear and turn it clockwise, looking straight at it from the front (don't move the cam).

In this position, the cams are on the marks, the crank should have stayed there from first disassembly and, most importantly, the cam, while in its mark, is retarded in the adjuster. If the chain were in pieces, you could just drape it over and pin it and you'd be set. It can't be assembled in this way, since we don't break the chain in the operation.

This example is conceptual to describe the effective positioning of all parts. During actual assembly, you must get the chain on the gear, have it pulled tight on the driver's side and be sure that the cam is retarded to match the concept above.

After becoming acquainted with the cam timing arrangement, remove the exhaust gear. Probably one of the toughest issues can be the removal of the pin from the driver's side guide rail (see Photo 7).

You turn the cam timer without disturbing the actual intake camshaft.
Yes, your taking up the free play in the advancer. You'll notice you
can rotate it left & right. So turn it lightly to the right until you
feel it stop.
Thanks for the clarification guys. Am also wondering (for those that have performed HG replacement) which method is easiest in removing the head:

1. removing head just by itself (lots of bolts)
2. removing head with exhaust manifolds and intake manifold connected
3. removing head with EVERYTHING attached

And lastly, am wondering, what items on the intake side need to be disconnected before removal besides the two large hoses and a few sensor harnesses?
At the dealer we unbolted the intake and removed the head with exhaust
manifolds together.

Be careful with the 2 dowls for intake. They are loose and will fall out.

I personally separated the upper intake from the lower and removed it from the engine.

The 2 clamps (77) at the rubber couplers.

Great insight -- thank you. Any other tips on this HG job that you can think of from your dealership days? It seems pretty straight forward but also it is apparent there are a few CRUCIAL aspects that one must be very much aware of.

Brake clean off the cam sprockets and chain and mark the chain to the sprockets
and make sure the locating pins are installed in the 4mm holes which should
be level with the head surface.

Mark both cams like this.

And if your car has the "Y" fitting on the left side heater hose fitting
replace that plastic part. Comes with the hoses crimped on.

They break just looking at them. Part#124-830-5415

Ref. your timing question, I looked up the W124 WIS procedures for your 104 engine, which you may find useful to read. The tensioner procedure is crucial.

1. 05-2230 checking camshaft timing - tensioner in place.
2. 05-2240 adjusting camshaft timing - tensioner removed.
3. 05-3100 remove/install chain tensioner.

Remove the head w/ exhaust & intake manifolds attached.

Just detach intake from 2 rubber bellows.

We used to do 3 or 4 head gaskets a week in the late 90's.

We tried all the different combinations of head removal.

Trust me, removing the upper intake is easy and makes head removal
less awkward. I've done no less the 40 cars this way.
