Hi Community,

My dream car was a 2015 GLK250, diesel. I wanted this Mercedes so bad, I found it online, and the next day, took a train from CT to VA, purchased the car, and drive it home. I've had it 3 years now, and still love the vehicle, but don't know if I can handle anymore exhaust/DFP (diesel particulate filter) issues.

The CEL has been popping up over the last 15k miles. Code P2002, over and over. I've tried the "cleaning system" with cleaner/purge, directly onto the filter. I've tried the fuel tank add ins. These have worked, but for only about 7k miles or so. I keep my car maintained to the strictest measures. But I can't seem to figure out how to handle the DPF issue. I have been avoiding going to the dealer, only to find out they want to replace everything in the system at thousands of dollars.

The car only has 69k miles, and I've been dealing with this for about 15k miles now. I do not understand how these issues can be happening on such a low mileage vehicle. I love this car. It has EVERY feature except the pushbutton start. The "park assist" self parking feature has been my friend's favorite feature when we go out, cause this car can find an impossible spot and slip right in! It's really an amazing vehicle.

But I've read several experiences of people trying to figure this out. Going from dealer to dealer, getting different stories, because the dealers can't even figure out how to fix the filter error. This sucks, cause the vehicle is out of its warranty, and I cannot find any exceptions to the exhaust system with extended coverage. I've read that CANADA is luck enough to have an extension on the exhaust/DPF coverage, but not the USA.

I do love my German cars, and I really love my diesels. (TDI before this). But with the world changing, diesel becoming more scarce in the market, I don't know if the exhaust issue is worth it anymore for me. My next vehicle is gonna be a Tesla, but I thought that would be way off in my future. I've always had diesels, and one 100% electric vehicle, which was crazy fun to drive. My move back to electric may be coming sooner than I anticipated, if I can't get this DPF issue resolved. Any suggestions, without having to spend thousands at a dealership?

Thanks in advance - Pete

Pete, you could remove dpf and get rid of the filters I know sombody in Coral Gables that could do it for you.
Florida does not have inspection so you don't have to worry about a tail pile smoke test.

I would at least do this, or have a reasonable shop do it, before abandoning your love child.

This is exactly what I used (except I fashioned my own sprayer). That's what I mean, I'm loosing hope here. I'm in CT if anybody knows anyone in the area. Does anyone know why I would be experiencing these issues at less than 60k miles on a well kept vehicle!?! I bought it from a dealership, and the owner before me kept very good care of her as well.

Poor Ciesel the Diesel... :(

If your emissions are under warranty take vehicle to the dealer and have them fix for free. If warranty expired then you can stress about either fix it yourself or your mechanic. As a last resort you can get a tuner to remap the software in your cdi module and get rid of egr dpf adblue and the horrible flaps. Delete should be last resort

What are your typical driving distances? Is it mostly low speed rides around town?
Do you know when a regeneration cycle is underway - usually very hot noises from the exhaust when stopped?
Is your scanner capable of showing soot levels?

Most of my drives are typically 1 hour, 20 mins. It is my commute to work 2-3 days a week. Other than that, I have an occasional "around town" drive, but not often.

I do all my oil changes myself, with the kits of Liquid Moly from FCPEuro, specific for my diesel. I have always been about the "preventative maintenance" measures. Take care of it now, she [the Benz] will take care of me later.

Also, to provide an update, I dropped her off at the shop today. Fingers crossed this all works out and will be covered under the warranty. I cannot thank HIRNBEISS enough for pointing out that footnote on the coverage details.

Update!!

I made an appointment, and dropped Ciesel the Diesel at the Dealership. They had her THREE DAYS, and determined it was simply the NOx sensors downstream causing the P2002 code. It IS covered under warranty until 80k miles, as Hirnbeiss pointed out. I made sure to point out it should be covered under warranty, and I was told I would need to "speak to the third party I have that warranty thru", and I explained what Hirnbeiss provided. They were not aware of this, and did end up covering what was to be found... Initially I was told I would need a new SCR Cat [Catalyst] and NOx sensors. Two days later, I was told the NOx sensors failed, and that was all that needed replacing, NOT the SCR CAT. Per the Invoice Report:
"69826 faulty down stream Nox sensor controller. performed quick test and found that code: P200200 The efficiency of the diesel or gasoline particulate filter (cylinder bank 1) is not sufficient. and P229F29 Nox sensor 2 (cylinder bank 1) has a malfunction. There is an invalid signal. when processes code p200200 was prompted to diagnose p229f29. replaced down stream NOx sensor and performed initialization of the sensor and recorded control unit data. performed SCN coding. test drove the car and monitored upstream and down stream Nox sensors and found that the sensors were reading properly."
I cannot thank everyone enough who contributed, but a HUGE thanks to Hirnbiess. I hope this also helps anyone in the future. I owe you lunch, Hirnbiess!

Fixed (hopefully).

Invoice:
"Cause: 541011 Perform Quick Test
Man Exhaust Gas Line Core Charge
Clamp
Thrust Ring
Screw
Clamp
Screw
Profile Clamp F Exhaust
495980 SCR Catalytic Converter Replace
69944 found that the SCR cat was causing the check engine light to come on. hooked up battery charger, performed quick test and found that there were codes present for the efficiency of the diesel or gasoline particulate filter is not sufficient (P200200). proceeded with the self guided test. was asked if there were any other codes present related to the current code being processed. there were no other codes present at this time. was prompted to check for updates. all updates were performed and the CDI is completely up to date. next removed the engine air box and performed a visual inspection on the engine air filter. found that the filter was in good shape. reinstalled the engine air filter. performed plausibility check of the temperature sensor in the exhaust system. found that the check was OK. next was prompted to check the charge air system for leakiness. found that the system held pressure with no signs of leaks. also smoked the system. the car was able to pass all self guided tests but has returned with the same code that affect the SCR cat. replaced SCR cat and test drove the car performing 2 drive cycles. check engine light did not return. "

Fingers crossed!

They found something and then replaced it. That's a good sign. It's if they found nothing and send you home you're destined for trouble.
