i bought my 99 500sl about 2 months ago from an older retired guy that said he had never taken the hard top off, he said he didn't know what color the soft top was but he assured me it worked fine because he had just had the dealer go completely over the car, so far everything he told me has been to the letter true, it has been cold here so i have not taken the top off either, my question to you guys is what is your best guess on the soft top color? the car is i believe what mercedes calls silver sand, sort of a cross between silver and gold with tan interior, i have seen them have black,dark brown, and a funky tan color, (i hope not) soft tops, please give me your best guess, i will take the top off next week and share the findings.

the SIMPLE WAY is to:
get flashlight, open your trunk lid and by the corner openings on the carpet where your trunk lid shocks goes IN/OUT, deep you will be able to see some small peace of the folded soft top corner ..... if you know where to stare it will take you less than 5 sec. ..... LOL

I recall reading somewhere that someone bought a R129 without checking only to discover upon removing the HT (after taking it home) that the soft top was missing. No frame, no canvas (and I assume no leaking hydraulic either).

ok guys tonight was the night, the top is dark brown, everyone thanks for the guess and i owe a bveer to the winners, the top was just as the old guy said brand new and worked like a champ, i am thrilled.
