My driver's door works OK ... that is, you can hear the little motor pulling the door closed just as it should ... but it's gotten a tad loose over the years. You can hear the outside air swishing by, and it rattles slightly. I looked at the latch assembly, but it's not jumping out at me: how can I tighten it just a bit? ... it's gotta be fairly easy, no?

Damn this forum is lame. People selling S600 grilles get responses, and simple technical questions go unanswered. Where are the enthusiasts and wrenchers? I'm also a member of some british sports car forums and they can tell you how to fully take the car apart and put it back together again. Out.

Its your check strap

Go to mercedesshop.com for tech advice but W140 is a way to complicated car for any novice. Dual pane windows, heavy doors all tire out the strap. The strap needs to be replaced. Unless you know an expert Mercedes shop skilled in MB interior repair then go to dealer. I got mine changed on my 99 s420 I think it took 2 hours of labor for them to fix it. Part is like $50 + 190 labor. I think the loose strap will tire out the vaccum system setup in the door so fix it ASAP or just make sure you slam the door. If it is making noise still then you are on borrowed time. You dont want to mess up the problem by not fixing it.

Re: Its your check strap

I got it fixed, at an independent shop specializing in Mercs. All they did is slightly adjusted the strike plates. Boy is the car quieter now; the doors hold still. Cost = $20 for both sides! Life is good!
