My car has a central thumbwheel for adding cold air. There is no explanation of how it works in the manual.

I read on this site that it will cool heated air which makes sense.

Does it make the air colder as well in warm weather conditions. If I have it on blue, the air is very nice and cool, but is sometimes accompanied by an odour (not unpleasant, almost like an air freshner that people put in their cars). I had it on warm (not blue) for some time and did not notice the smell. Is this coincidence? Is the car cooling the air in some way without using the compressor producing this odour as a side effect?
