I was just reading up on different topics here and I find little bits of advice and tips along the way.

The harmonic balance really tripped me out with the recall, so I got a jacket on and checked the numbers on the darn thing. Luckily I had a safe number on it. But, since one of the bad numbers on it had a 6 and I was looking at it in the mirror, I had to really thing about a backwards nine and the baseline of the font. It must be hell to be a mechanic.

After that close call I looked up a few more things. Thanks to G wagon and checkcodes I have now found that my tensioner is a piece of crap. It has the t10 male nipple sticking out of it and it really does seem like a lousy piece of shrapnel waiting to frag my engine compartment.

I ordered a new Tensioner from autohouse, a Litens. I also ordered a new belt for shits and giggles from fcpeuro along with a LUK idler pulley from ebay. I hope the ebay dude is a trusted bro. :)

Anyway, if you don't hear from me for a while... It's because my wife has beaten me for throwing more money into the car than her this month.

Thanks for all your help here guys. It's a pleasure and an honor to be around people who know what the hell they are talking about.

You're making all the right moves ... do the forum search on replacing that idler pulley.. the bolt is loooonnng and you need to loosen or remove the fan.. kindof a pain as compared to EZ on the belt and tensioner..

Nah. Lot of the members here have lot of time on their hands and replace lot of parts before they reach 50% of their usable life.
When was the last time you preemptive replaced washers on your bathroom faucet, or toilet flapper?
I simply have too many vehicles and other power equipment to follow all the recommendations. Just recommended oil changes would keep me busy for weeks every year. This way my forklift has about 7 years old oil, motorhome only 6 years.
I have natural ability to sense something wrong with machinery and years spend working with them lets me catch problems before they become a disaster.
Things going wrong almost always give you some warning, so the trick is not to ignore it. Years ago I put low tire pressures monitors on our AMG. Being out of town when the alarm come on for my wife - she pulled the plug for the monitor. Good thing the leak was very small and did not ruin $500 tire.

I'm a little OCD with maintenance Kaj! I have replaced the screens and o rings on my faucets just for the hell of it. Firing pins and springs long before they wore down and Even rebuilt my toilets with HE fill and flush valves. So, having this e320 is not helping my compulsion. :)

After seeing the shrapnel destruction from the tensioner pulley, I decided it would be a good thing to do since the part wasnt that much and Im going on a long road tour. Once I viewed the damage to other cars like mine, I would have been listening and thinking about it several times on the tour.

My landcruiser is a different beast. I rarely wash it and it gets oil and grease whenever it feels like it needs it. Other than that, it just gets gas and the hell beat out of it.

Now, If I could only figure out how to maintain women properly to prevent overheating and premature wear.

Post back if your tour is bringing you to the CA bay area.

As to your last comment...you can just as well leave off the last six words without really changing the meaning. ;)

i'm with kajtek that paranoia is not good in this case, all that money and time spent on perfectly good parts can be spent on more important things like children college fund, or a vacation:D if not careful these cars can be a money pit. good number of owners still do 3k mile oil changes on 15k mile oil. previous owner spent almost double on 70k miles and 5 years than i have in almost 200k miles and 10 years.

I just want to get it on the level. Just got this thing a few months ago and the previous owner let it sit in an airplane hanger. I did check the tensioner and pulley. Both seemed to be able to cant a little too much for my liking.

Im heading east but would like to say hello to checkcodes in cali some day. Same thing goes if you ever get neat Mo.tana.
