Read the common issues sticky over in the regular 210 forum, that will give you lots to go on.

Personally, I'd look at 2000 and newer, post facelift gives you some nice additions.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Specifics on the OP's request:

1) Purchase price - edmunds.com will give you a good guide. For used car values best realistic condition is "clean". Only garaged, low mileage (under 25K) cars are considered to be "exceptional.

2) Salt area - as compared to non-salt areas, you need to make a functional undercarriage inspection for rust (and check front "spring perches") as well as a cosmetic salt damage/rust inspection

3) Tranny - unless you have documented tranny service, you will need to service the tranny. Originally, MB recommendation of "sealed for life" proved incorrect.

4) Front brake rotors - for the E55 are special double-faced rotors which are pricey, but fortunately can run well out to close to 100K miles. Check the condition/wear of the front rotors

5) Low profile performance rubber is expensive - running from the lowest cost Kumho to the new Michelin Pilot All Season Plus (around $1100 for the rubber alone). So the condition of the rubber on the car now is a key issue.

6) Get a in depth PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) from the best qualified local indie. For around $200 can save you $1000's or give you $1000's of restful sleep depending on the outcome

Dont let someone tell you that 99s are inferior.

All of us that have 99s will tell you they have no regrets and have had fewer issues.

I just bought a 99, 135k miles, very clean.

On my list of things it needs today:
tranny service
valve cover and/or breather cover gaskets
front ball joint (will replace as pairs, maybe with new control arms)
tail light issues (aftermarket tail lights cause issues, I got mine to work (for now...))
front brakes

Stuff it needs soon:
shifter linkage bushings
driveshaft flex couplers
more varied suspension bushings, tie rod ends, etc
top of steering wheel cover repaired/replaced

This is my 5th MB, and so far I'm VERY happy with it. :)

If it shifts rough, or as preventative maintenance, it needs new transmission filter and fluid change. About $100 to do it yourself, $300-$400 at a shop.
