the W201 reliability

I was over in Germany and saw a couple 190's that had over a million kilometers(about 600,000 miles)

My friend's 1985 190E 2.3 has over 314,000 miles.

Every 190 owner should be proud of their vehicle. It offers the best reliability, safety and luxury for this size car. And yes, it will become a Daimler-Benz classic vehicle late in this decade. The 190 made history by proving that very small cars can still be luxurious and safe.

190E durability

I bought an '86 190E 2.3 a month ago for 2 grand for my wife, whose 318i had seen its last patch of asphalt. I had 2 grand in the bank and I had to have a car right away and I had just looked at this E a few days prior. It was being driven by a wholesaler as a daily driver and had 133k miles and a few dents and the silver metallic paint was shot. The A/C worked and all the interior buttons worked. Tranny was tight and the engine was dry. My wife is very hard on machines. Example: Someone managed to dent the left rear panel nicely. My wife informed me that she had driven the car with the parking brake on! Then I find out that she's been shifting from Reverse to Drive while accelerating! Then she drives it off a parking lot ledge, resting it on the underside of the motor, wheels hanging. (If this ever happens to you have a professional towing company come and 'tow' it out.) Well, after all that the car seems to be fine. The shifter is a bit loose but the transmission works great - I've given it a healthy workout to check for slippage and it shifts great. The little beast still has some pep, though it's 2.3 pep, but not bad for my wife. Smooth engine, can barely hear or feel it at a rest. I'm with you guys -- these are great cars: fun, classy, and almost outrageously comfortable.

popkwizz,

How is your 1986 300E? Probably more than 200,000 miles, huh?...

pushing 75,000

I bought the 300E last December with 62k miles on it. It has mint interior, everything works except the window motor for the right front passenger door, which I think burned out because of a sticky push button staying on. It is extraordinarily quiet. I put Yokos on it because they were so quiet on my (now deceased) 3 series BMWs. I paid 8k for it and I've put a few things into it but this is a great car and I could put a few more grand into it and still have a better car than most of the drivel you see for 20k out there new! I would say it is at least twice the car of a 190E, but the 190s are much smaller, hence a bit more spry on the move. I am a happy E owner!

yet to hear an owner complain...

I know a few people who have 190s, and everyone I know just loves them to bits.

I can't speak for the petrol motors in the 190Es, but as far as my wife's 190D 2.5 turbo goes, she would never want for another car. It's unbelieveably reliable, is a beatiful looking car, drives beautifully, ridiculously economical and goes like the clappers [:D]. It cost about as much as a small new domestic car. New domestic car vs 15 year old Mercedes? The choice is pretty simple I'd say [;)].

ditto :)

Bought it a few days ago in good running condition for $2k. Changing brakepads this weekend and then getting a paint job in a couple weeks. Having fun with it so far :)
1985 190E 2.3 Bargan!

Knowing the dealer I bought it from, i got the car for $1,200. He had $2,700 on the window...but he took care of me. It has 215,000 miles on the clock, the idle is a bit erratic, and idles a tad rough, but an electronic engine tunning from the dealership and new motor mounts (and a new main fan clutch) is all my baby needs to be beautiful again. Shes in amazing shape and runs nicely and silently, (except the idles a bit off at startup) Slight crunch in driver's side fender next to corner light, but a new painted panel is on the way. Shes a 1985 MB 190E 2.3, Classic Mercedes Yellow.
rough start-up idle momentary

My '86 190E has a rough start-up idle for about 5 seconds. I think it has to do with function check or something. I ignore it.

1985 190E 2.0

My 85 190E 2.0( yes, exclusively imported from Germany because 2.0's aren't sold in the U.S.)also has a rough start. For the first 5-10 seconds the engine shakes and rumbles quite violently but the ride is smooth and pleasant. This usually happens after a long night or a long period of not using the car

Maybe your wife should consider taking the bus if she really drives like that! [;)]

I had my car repainted a beautiful seafoam green and when it was in a mercedes(not corporate just a specialest) paint shop they said that it was the timing chain that makes that rattle. I'm going to get it changed as they have no clearance engines thus if it goes your engine is poo poo. Any info on this?
Re: I had my car repainted a beautiful seafoam green and when it was in a mercedes(not corpo

You might not need to replace the chain, just the timing chain tensioner. MB issued an upgraded tensioner and you should have your service folks check if you have the update.
