After 6 months of kerfuffle the LS3 is finally going in the old SL

Well done Daniel from MercStar on what is certainly a masterpiece of engineering

for the afficiandos this is a spare engine we are using where an authentic engine is not needed by the supp regs. we have deliberately made it easy to retrofit a M117 and when we find the cash intend on building the mother of all supercharged M117's

I still haven't done a full on the hoist shoot yet but have got some track day stuff

On Jan 3rd a couple of the other Targa guys and myself got out to Symmons Plains for some testing

It was really quite and handful for the first couple of sessions and was kicking and bucking a fair bit. Guess thats predictable when you put circa 600hp in an old Merc

Camera stuff was only moderate in quality and i am getting a incar system with data logging for better video output

anyway enjoy the stuff so far and we are getting geared up for a more serious Motorsport year so lots more coming

Youtube keeps breaking the aspect ratio
they were recorded in 16:9 but keep reverting to 4:3

i guess he probably means taking photos of the car while its up on a Hoist(big thing that lifts the car 7 feet or so in the air so you can work under it)

Either way sounds like a really nice project, in the write up are you going to be able to quote some prices of the major items and whether the car is easy to drive on the normal roads and how much fuel usage it does :)

Seems to be a fair few people doing this to SLCs in AUS, some guy on the Gold coast is selling his old 350 engine on ebay, unless thats you lol

Nice to see another Aussie gets the vernacular :)

I am going to do a spec sheet poster
indicative $ were <$15k for the entire exercise
fuel usage - when its empty i fill it up again
like any race car it is a pig to commute in. i lasted a week before asking for my 230 back from Daniel. it suffers form all the cramped cabin, lack of creature comforts, impossible to go slow. Even the Melbourne CBD posing couldn't compensate. having said that 20 years ago it didn't matter as i only had a rally car.

Doing this - putting cheviys in SL's?

Sway bar

There have been some religious debates about suspension on the SL

I have been advocating the largest sway bars possible
Others are from the shockers camp and another in the spring group

we upgraded the bar about 15% as the resistance does not scale linearly
I have already ripped the bolts out of the chassis, so if you increase you will have to drill out the hole and use high tensile bolts. another cheaper idea is to bolt and second one to it with 4 couplings. you will also need to use non rubber mounts.

Exactly torsional stiffness is proportional to r^4. that means that a 20% increase in diameter = 1.2^4 = 2.07 ~ twice the stiffness. The stock 560SL has a 25mm bar the stock SL600 is 30mm. I was considering having a 28 or 30mm bar fabricated as my first pass. Do you have any good links to any of the SL suspension debates.

The bar is 28mm and is customed manufactured

Debates have all been verbal at the workshop

I think for a package deal for Tarmac Rallying you can't get too precise. Thats more of a track strategy where you can tune the car for each track

It does continue to be relegious but ultimatley it woudl be the combinations of springs, shocks and bars that will give enough stability vs complaince for rough roads

Still experimenting
